  1. OK, I posted this in the hospice section, because I am now a hospice nurse and this is a hospice patient. She recently moved from another state to be with her daughter and was transferred to our agency. The doctor is very much aware of her pain. I was just wanting to know about pain control for bone pain in cancer patients, like if anyone knew of a combination of drugs that worked really well. Bone pain is the worst type of pain to help manage. Thank you for all your
  2. I have a patient with lung cancer that has spread to spine. Pain is horrendous, any suggestions. Currently on Fentanly 100mcg, Percocet 10 (2) every 4hrs and Roxanol every hr as needed. Thanks for any help.
  3. She was in her mid 40's. Not much history. Had been feeling tired for awhile, went to her doctor a couple weeks ago, he scheduled cardiolyte (which she passed). That was done a week before I saw her with Hgb of 3.2!! She was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, only lived about a month.
  4. In my state we can get an auto license plate that has RN with a picture of stethoscope on it. Today I learned an Lpn in my facility has one on her car. She is not in school to obtain her her and no one in her household is an RN. I just find this strange.
  5. Goshen Hospital Employees Fired After Refusing Mandatory Flu Shot (VIDEO) It sounds like the religion objection were their final hope. "I believe in God and he will protect me from the flu". Each hospital in the system is responsible for the firing of the staff, so I expect there will be more terminated.
  6. Brooks Ariel for women, there's a Brook's equalivent for men, but don't know the name. It's the best Brooks style, but you could try others. I also like Merrell shoes.
  7. My hospital hires student nurse techs. Same job as CNA, but you are more likely to get a job as RN if you were a tech, not always but it helps. Indiana also does not issue temp licenses anymore also. You could call HR at the local hospitals and ask what they suggest.
  8. Thats a good idea. Thanks for replying.
  9. Any suggestions? I'm thinking either bath/body or flowers.
  10. We started bedside reporting a month ago and most of us now love it. It goes much quicker with less chit/chat. As nurses we don't seem to like change, but this really isn't as bad as you think. Give it a chance.
  11. When I was in nursing school many years ago, the student I was teamed with had a patient on a sips/chips diet. So she gave her a sprite and some potato chips!
  12. Do you work in a hospital? What was she admitted for? Was she on steroids?
  13. The best site I have found: http://www.wilkes.med.ucla.edu/inex.htm
  14. I am sorry for your loss. It is a personal experience only which you can decide how long. Six months is not a long time. When my mother died, it took almost a year. Then 15 years later, I took a new job at the hospital she died it. Until I was asked to float to that floor, I didn't realize how it would affect me, seeing the room I had only seen that one day. But I recovered and made it through the day. But when my sister died from cancer, I was an oncology nurse. I found I could not give encouragement to patients going through the same cancer, and I had to chose a different speciality. You will make the right decision for you and you will know what to do.
  15. First off relax, you have only been doing this for 3 weeks. The two most important things with venipuncture is vein selection and anchoring the vein. Take your time looking for the best vein. As someone else suggested have them dangle their arm, use a blood pressure cuff and my favorite, apply a warm blanket for about 10minutes. Then when you find a vein, you must anchor it, how many times have you heard "my veins roll". And last but not least have confidence in your self, so you miss a few, you will eventually get most of them.
  16. So how long does it take to break them in? I have had for several months, but can only wear 4hrs at a time, then my feet just hurt and I have to change them. I really like them though and would like to wear them. Kristy
  17. This is like a step back. About 10-15 years ago we used to hand write the mars and it was never reviewed by pharmacy, but pharmacy reviewed the order. Do you work for a large facility? All I can say is wow, med error waiting to happen.
  18. Use just shaving cream, you can buy the cheap stuff and you need just a little foam, spread it, then wipe. Really works, used to use it when I worked and the nursing home and now at the hospital we have an occasional "sticky poo" and I grab the shaving cream. It is also a skin conditioner, so really good for the skin. kt
  19. Our hospital allows trained techs to remove pivs. Never had a problem. On another note, had a patient about 10 years ago remove her own iv (being helpful) and she broke off the canula, it was a Saf-T-Intima. She had to go to surgery to have it removed.
  20. esrun00 posted a topic in General Nursing
I was bored so went to AN store. I was really shocked to see candy covered sunflower seeds in an imitation pill bottle. There was another snack also. This so upset me to see candy items being sold disguised as medicine. Would you let your children have the candy cigerettes or bottles of imitation liquor bottles filled with kool-aide? I don't think so. Pharm companies has stopped making medicine look appealing to children and now this site is marketing it? This just really bothered me and I think it was totally inappropriate. Flame away.
  21. You should have reported this to your supervisor. We cannot answer the question. Report it first thing in morning.
  22. I was thinking she was uninsured or on medicaid.
  23. I would try asking them what you and she need to do to get along. You are her superior and she is probably testing you. If that doesn't work, go to your manager. 14 patients and two techs and she expects you to help with baths? And wow you have 14 patients? Wow.
  24. I'm thinking she will not last long as a nurse, it really is hard work (esp for someone who doesn't have to work). I can't imagine anyone with the amount of money you are suggesting, would want to do this job.
