  1. Oh, I am so sad to read this. Esme was an amazingly kind person with a huge heart. I learned so much from her over the years and admired her more than I can say. My deepest condolences to her family.
  2. Very serious. I assume you called neurosurgery quickly? Any updates now?
  3. I'm so very, very sorry ((hugs))
  4. wrong thread, sorry
  5. Yeah. All of this and so much more.
  6. This post makes me very sad. Imagine if that were my mother being treated like that? It definitely needs to be brought to your instructor's attention, and she can pass the information along to the appropriate person.
  7. Hello, Can you elaborate on which angle you're coming from? Do you want to know the nurses' role and best practices, or the nuc med tech's? Or something else?
  8. No way. I would have chosen OT or even ST. The redeeming part of my job is the relationships I have with my patients and their parents. I could have had a personal connection with my patients as therapist. This job has damaged my body and my mental /emotional health. The hours, and devastation to my mind and body, have not been healthy for my family life. I realize that the mental and emotional devastation have been due to the specialty and location I ended up in. This is the first time I've complained publicly about my job and career choice. Now I'm being so honest. I feel guilty for writing this.
  9. Our neurosurgeons remove them.
  10. Pediatric neurosurgery and neuro ICU step-down. 3:1 ratio. Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  11. Most likely, but it still depends a bit on the specific situation. Can you give more details?
  12. That's typical; most nursing interviews are more about your personality and whether you would be a good fit on the unit. Let us know if you get the job!
  13. Neurology means studying the brain and nervous system. This can include many things: brain tumors, demyelinating processes, neurodegenerative diseases, infectious diseases of the brain and spinal cord, seizure disorders, TBI, and a host of other things. Neuroscience is focused more on how the brain and its functions control the body. It can involve mapping to locate the speech, memory, and motor centers, scans of the structure of the brain, etc. Neuropsychology also falls into the Neuroscience category. Neuroscience is the umbrella under which epileptology stands.
  14. You're welcome. Did you have your interview yet?
  15. Is it adult or peds? I recommend researching the different dx and types of neurosurgeries applicable to your patient population. Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  16. To the OP: huge hugs to you. I get you. I could have written this post, minus the paramedic past. I am a neuro step-down RN in a level one pediatric trauma center. I see the lowest of humanity. I don't feel comfortable mentioning any of the cases I've seen, since I've only been a nurse for 3 years and some of the cases might be recognized. Working on my unit has changed me in so many ways. Some days I feel like a misanthrope.
  17. Yes, I've seen it in the final days of life in cases of brain herniation. Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  18. "I could do your job." Because they can feed their child through a g-tube, they think they could do my job???😡 Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  19. Do you have anyone you can network with? All but one of the jobs I've ever had were a result of "knowing someone". Any contacts you made during your clinicals? What about any of your instructors that you developed a rapport with? A recommendation from an instructor goes a long way. Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  20. So very sad. What country are you in? Can people write a living will, or advanced directive? Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  21. My base pay is $25.16, less than 3 years experience. Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  22. I'm sorry you had to experience that. I feel like you did the right thing by not reacting in front of him, because as previous posters have said, he wanted a reaction. Any reaction. I'm even sorrier for you that this is evidently some sort of "VIP" or political situation, and that your management would ignore this abuse. Ordinarily, if this had happened to me, I would have gone directly to my unit managers and they would have called our Risk Manager. This creep would either have lost his visitation privileges, or received a final warning. However, I realize that this is a special case. Honestly, I think I still would have gone to management, in hopes that they would listen to me. And because I would have been furious. What a jerk. Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  23. What's wrong with the parents taking their 7-week old baby? I once took my 5-week old baby with me to the ED, because I was exclusively breastfeeding and I knew I would be there for a long time. Did you consider this possibility? Or the possibility that they had nobody to babysit on short notice? Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
  24. I say "10 is being burned alive, and 0 is no pain", what is your pain? I work Peds, so I have to be at least sortof nice
  25. Dudette, I wish I could tell you about the transition to DEU, but it occurred before my time. However it's not quite like you describe. We don't have students at all times, just 2-3 days per week from January through April (or May?) Not every nurse gets a student. Usually it's just nurses who choose to be DEU preceptors. I was a student about 4 years ago on this very DEU, so of course I'm fond of the model. 😀 Sent from my iPhone using allnurses
