Did you get accepted into a nursing school the first time you applied? In California
I was accepted into the one and only CSU nursing program that I applied to the first time. This program admitted students based on a point system which was based off of our cumulative GPA, nursing science GPA, nuring non-science GPA and TEAS score, as well as a few extra points for previous healthcare experience, second language, being from the area, etc. Since I did my pre reqs at the school, I knew what was needed of me to get into the nursing program and I worked very hard (as we all did!) to get A's and a high score on my TEAS test. Good luck to you! It is tough but not impossible!

New Grad RN in CA find any work in CA?
Hello! I am a new grad from CA (Central Valley near Modesto) and have been offered two positions at hospitals since my graduation in May. I was offered float pool at a small hospital in Turlock and cardiac step down ICU at a larger hospital in Modesto. The two hospitals I received offers from both stressed how much they look at geographical location because they do not want to invest thousands of dollars in a nurse who will leave after they get 1 year experience. I know that attending the local university and living in the area greatly helped my chances at those two hospitals. Good luck to you!

New Grads: how long did it take you to find a job, or how long have you been ...
Northern Central Valley, CA Graduated May 2104 with my BSN Passed NCLEX June 2014 Received two job offers two days apart in July 2014. One was for float pool on day shift at the hospital I did my senior preceptorship at, and the other was for cardiac step down ICU at a much larger hospital in their Versant RN Residency Program. I accepted the cardiac unit and start July 28th. I applied to maybe 10 positions so I feel very fortunate to have received two offers so quickly.

I really like the fact that our program is 3 years long compared to the traditional 2 year programs. I also feel like our school does a great job giving us the whole picture of nursing with all the extra courses we take (professional nursing, nursing research, issues facing the profession). I am very happy with my school!

Where are you starting your clinicals?
We started on general medical floors (tele, oncology, surgical, etc). I am now in my 5th semester and start in the surgical ICU next Thursday. We also have rotations this semester in the cardiovascular and neuro ICU's, the CCU, the PACU, ER and OR. I am very excited for clinical this semester!

Psychiatric & Community Nursing Semester
Truckinusa - not sure if you are talking to me or the OP but I am in a BSN program at a CA State University.

Psychiatric & Community Nursing Semester
I had both mental health and community health in the spring and to be honest I wasn't crazy about either course and was very happy to finish out the semester. I thought I would not like mental health at all and actually liked it and its clinical quite a bit more than community health, which I found to be boring and not very useful unless you want to be a public health nurse. I enjoy being in the hospital so I did not like the clinicals for community health either which were primarily in elementary/high schools, the county health dept and people's homes. I found that I did not have to study much at all for community health but did have to study and read quite a bit for mental health. Overall I would not call either of those classes difficult when compared to other nursing courses.

Tablet advice & input
I bought an iPad my 2nd semester of NS and have had it for a little over a year. I use it all the time in class for notes and pulling up the Powerpoint to follow along. I love having it as it is so light and all my notes for all my classes are saved in one place. I use Evernote to take notes on, it's a free app and has so far worked very well for me. I would highly recommend getting a tablet if you are a person that not need or want paper notes to highlight or write on.

What type of rotations did you go through in nursing school?
1st semester has no clinicals - we spent all our time in the Skills Lab 2nd semester is Adult Health 1 with clinicals at any one of 4 hospitals on various departments (Telemetry, oncology, surgical, GI lab, ortho, respiratory, neuro, etc) 3rd semester is OB and Peds with clinicals at any one of 4 hospitals on various floors (L&D, PP, NICU, Peds) and then we do a weekend stay (orientation Friday and clinical 0630- 1700 Sat and Sun) at a major CA children's hospital and I was luckily one of 5 students to be placed in the NICU which was an incredible experience 4th semester is Community Health and Psych - For community health we can have clinicals in a multitude of places such as schools, homes, clinics, etc and for psych I was in a locked acute care facility 5th semester is adult health 2 with clinicals at any one of the 4 hospitals on various floors (ICU, OR, ER, PACU, etc) 6th semester is our preceptorship where we can request any hospital and dept in the area we wish to be placed at (can even request major hospitals 1-2 hours away although we may not necessarily get what we request) Overall I have been extremeley pleased with my clinical rotations thus far in NS (I am going into my 5th semester) and feel that my school gives us lots of exposure to all different areas

Advice for Peds/OB
I loved my Peds and OB rotation, it was my very favorite semester! I also liked my OB days at the hospital (PP, L&D, NICU) much more than my pediatric days because my patients often cried and were scared every time somebody came into the room (understandable) while my OB patients were happy to see us. Like a PP, I too wrote down all pediatric VS for my particular patient's age range as they are so different than adults. Other than that I did not do anything different as far as studying or reading. Go in with an open mind and you may surprise yourself with how much you like it! I had never considered NICU and now after spending a rotation in a tertiary NICU of a major children's hospital with babies on ECMO, cranial hemorrhages, rare genetic disorders, etc I know I have found my true passion in nursing.

Class of 2014
I have one more upper division GE that I'm taking this summer so I'm happy to get it out of the way and be finished. I absolutely loved maternal health JerseyGirl6! Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did.

Class of 2014
What classes are you all taking this fall? I am taking adult health II (advanced med surg), adult health II clinicals every other Th and Fri from 0630-1830, advanced pathophysiology, and a nursing leadership and management class. I am definitely very excited to get back into the hospital and especially to get into the ICU, PACU, ER, etc this semester as I was in community health and mental health last semester so I was not really in a hospital other than the locked psychiatric unit.

Assignment you learned the most from?
Our hospice assignment really stuck out for me from my mental health clinical this semester. We were assigned a day at a hospice house or a day with a home hospice nurse and then had to write about the experience in a paper. It doesn't quite fit into mental health but I didn't mind and thought it was such a great experience to look at the other side of life and a different type of nursing. I'm not sure if most programs do this (I am in a BSN program) but I learned an incredible amount and thought this was a very worthwhile, educating, and eye opening experience that I will take with me throughout my nursing career.

Working while in school?
I have worked part time since I started my BSN program 2 years ago (1 year left!) and have always managed well. I usually work 2 days per week, for a total of 12-16 hours a week which is a good amount for me. Working during NS is very doable, you just need to manage your time wisely and you will do fine!

Help On Classes In High School For Nursing
I recommend taking statistics if you can. I know you said you're taking geometry but if there's any way to take stats I would. It is a pre-requisite for most nursing programs and if you take it AP it may even transfer to college. If not you will be prepared for it in college and will likely do better if you have already been exposed to the material once before in high school.

Backpacks
Not sure what area of CA you live in, but here in N. CA we have lots of Dick's Sporting Goods - do a quick Google search and see if there are any around you!

Give Me Hope
I have worked part time since I started NS four semesters ago, usually two days per week. There are times when I have had to miss some things school related due to work. Time management is important as you will not have as much free time to study and write papers as other students who do not have to work. School and work do not consume my life either - having fun is important, especially during NS!
