  1. I worked there also and just left after about a year. I started last year and now am back home with my experience and 2 job offers! I agree with DatMurse comments. Also, I'll add that St. A's is AWESOME!! I'm so thankful for my experience there in Med/Oncology and the wonderful people I worked with. If this hospital and environment and co-workers and managers were home, I would never leave my job at this hospital. I believe it is the ABSOLUTE BEST EXPERIENCE FOR A NEW GRAD AVAILABLE in the country today. The pay sucks, but with differentials and picking up extra shifts every once in a while (which is no problem if you want to) and flying home for a week every two weeks (yes, the managers really worked with me and my schedule to allow me to fly home for a week every two weeks and I was still able to get in my full time hours) and I netted somewhere between $1900-2200 a check depending on how many shifts I had during that pay period. If you can do it, go to St. A's. They also will NOT hire anyone with a heartbeat. I've known one nurse who applied and didn't get hired.
  2. Thanks resqbug!! I was starting to think that I did something wrong in posting and no one could actually see my resume.

  7. Hello there. I would really love some advice about what you nurse managers and hospital HR folks think would be the top 5 skills/competencies would be for a RN candidate for a Med/Surg position? Thanks in advance!
  8. Nienna. Thanks so much for the PDF file. This has been so helpful!! I see you have 12 years experience! That is awesome. I wish you the best in your career. I'm on 7 months now and hopefully this PDF will help me to build a resume that stands out. I also ordered the books in the back of the PDF. Thanks again!
  9. Hello. I am currently working in a Medical Unit. This is my first job out of nursing school and I love the hospital, my fellow staff, my managers are INCREDIBLE and pretty much everything about it. The only downside is that my husband and three kids are in another state and I am commuting back and forth and there is no way for my family to move to me. My kids really need me at home and being home only 1 week a month for the last 6 months is really starting to wear on my family. I need to get home and need to get help with my resume. Any suggestion on best ways to get help on my resume would be great. Are there certain key words I should use for the computers to get it noticed? Any help would be amazing. Thanks in advance!!

I am a new grad RN and I just accepted a position at a medical oncology unit. I'm super excited about it and so happy I found this thread. I will definitely follow the great advice given here! And good luck ValGirlRN I hope it works out for you!
  11. Jban, I would recommend going for at least your ADN if not your BSN to increase your chances of employment. And you should be open to relocating if possible. Nursing school prepared me for the NCLEX so although it was hard it was passable. I have now applied for 100+ jobs in CA without any luck, so I looked out of state and just accepted a RN position in ND so I'm very excited about my new adventure where I'll gain valuable acute hospital experience. Best of luck to you!
  12. Violetsmom, congrats on getting a job!! I'm in the same boat as you were, I'm in the Bay Area, CA, graduated May, Nclex June 9, applied for many jobs, but no bite yet. What's your secret? Do you have any advise to offer?
  13. Hello there. Just wanted to hear if any of you new grad RN's have found any work in CA yet? I could really use some uplifting stories about the job market in CA. If you have found an RN job, what did you get and how did you get it? Thanks!
  14. Hello. I have another question and thanks to all of you that have answered my previous question. The answers have been so insightful. My other question is this: Is non-hospital RN employment considered positive or negative on a new grad RN's resume who would eventually like to be employed in an acute care unit? I'm a new grad RN in California. Passed NCLEX on June 9, 2014. It is very hard to secure hospital positions as a new grad RN. I'm open to also looking at non-hospital RN positions, but have heard that if I want to ultimately end up in a hospital unit, that that experience could be looked on as a negative. Logically, I would think that any experience would only make me a better nurse down the line. Could any of you wise nurses out there please give your thoughts on this to a new RN that is eager to start her career? Best.
  15. Hello. I am a new grad RN in CA. Just graduated in May and took NCLEX on June 9, 2014 and passed! I am official with the CA Board of Registered Nursing! Anyways, I am now applying to many nursing positions and know that being a new grad RN is not an advantage right now. I want to do everything I can to better my chances of getting a job. I have a few questions: 1) For those of you hiring nurses, what is it specifically that deters you from hiring or even considering new grad RN's? 2) What can I do absent a nursing job, to mitigate the risks of hiring me, a new grad RN? Any advice would be really helpful here. Thanks so much in advance!
