  1. Great questions! You made a valid point that I never thought about with respect to salary. To me decent is $80k >. I guess I need to think more about what I truly love.
  2. I am thinking of leaving nursing but still need/want to work full time and would love to use my knowledge. Has anyone used a career counselor or found something they love and still make a decent income? Thanks!
  3. We have a new non-verbal elementary student with a history of biting staff members on the arms. We purchased Kevlar sleeves recently but have found out that they are not puncture proof. Does anyone have any product they have used with success? We do have a behavioral specialist assisting with this student. Thanks!
  4. I was just wondering what supplies everyone normally takes with them during a fire drill. Sometimes I feel like I am taking everything but the refrigerator. Thanks everyone for your wisdom and support!
  5. I get so frustrated with parents sometimes! I hope this little guy is ok. Most importantly, I hope tommorrow is a better day for you. p.s. I am wishing for summer vacation too!
  6. The responses so far have been great. I have a few to add as I have done flu clinics in the past: 1. Check all your supplies before you get started, nothing stinks more than finding out you don't have everything you need; 2. Be prepared for tons of questions from the people getting injections, some will be relevant, some not; 3. Have on hand orders and meds in the event of a reaction (usually Benadryl); 4. Have extra pens, they always seem to walk away; 5. Once you do a few clients, you will get yourself into a routine that works for you. Yes you will be fine. Enjoy!! :)
  7. Gentle {HUGS} and prayers for you and your family during this difficult time.
  8. School Nurse here. I have never heard of a moon cup but I would be curious to learn more about it.
  9. I would say tell family members how much you love and appreciate them because they are sometimes taken away too early, things always happen for a reason and lastly....good job dumping the jerk who told you he would marry you when you weighed 100 lbs!!
  10. Does anyone have any feedback good or bad on a Thermofocus Non-Contact Thermometer? It works by aiming a light beam at the forehead. I am in the process of purchasing a new thermomter and like the idea of not having to purchase probe covers which I seem to run out of very quickly. I just found an old thread on the Exergen Temporal Scanner. Any new feeback on that one? Thanks in advance.
  11. Thank you for your kind words! Afer a hectic few weeks at school, you made my day. :)
  12. My funniest visit was "my heart hurts" while holding her right hip!!! She was A&O x 3 and in no obvious distress.
  13. Congratulations!!
  14. I agree with Praiser, it is so nice to be away from the hospital. Happy Thanksgiving to all! My last day of school before the break is Tuesday.
  15. I honestly do not think LLG was trying to be sarcastic. I think LLG was trying to show the reality of what happens to managers when there are many applicants for only a few jobs in a tight job market. The benefits of being part of AN allows nurses to draw on the experience and assistance from other nurses. We are here to support each other and grow. I wish you the best of luck in your job search.
  16. I am sorry but I do not have an answer as to why that happened. It sounds to me that the head nurse is not supporting you. I wish you a relaxing Thanksgiving break. Sending cyber hugs to you :heartbeat
  17. Everything happens for a reason. Congrats!
  18. You deserve to be treated with respect. Those behaviors show a total lack of respect for you. I am sorry you were treated like that. :heartbeat
  19. Make some room for me, seems I am there too!!
  20. Had our first confirmed case today though I have been seeing lots of kiddos with temps >100 and the coughing and/or sneezing. This early surge has kept me a lot busier this year than last year. I am hoping for this wave to pass soon.......
  21. I have always worn scrubs which I prefer. I want to be wearing something that is lightweight if I have to run to the playground, gym, etc. I want to be recognizable by students and parents and I don't mind if I get thrown up on or bled on. During the summer, I usually work at a day camp that allows me to bring my kids with me. In my district, I have the option of stretching my paychecks through the summer. As with any nursing jobs school nursing can have some frustrating moments. That varies depending on the age group you work with, a lack of support from administration or parents that do not return phone calls. I have visited this forum often and have found some great advice. Good luck in your new job.
  22. If that situation happened at my school I would have done exactly the same as you did. You did nothing wrong. As Suesquatch said, stabilize and ship em out. Keep up the good work!
  23. Hi Everyone: I am Needsmorechocolate from NH. I have been a school nurse for three years. My experience is with elementary kids (K-8). I love the kids and this has been one of the toughest but most rewarding nursing jobs I have had. I enjoy the fact that no two days are alike! I lurk here on the boards almost daily. I have learned so much from reading all the posts. I hope everyone had a good day!
  24. Good information Purple! I have called 911 one time for a student having a seizure. Good luck with your interview. Keep us posted.
  25. Been too busy lately to post. We have to do daily reporting to the state that outlines the number of staff absent, students absent, visits to nurse, numbers of each absent with flu like illness. So now that means I am responsible for calling parents of absent children and document symptoms. Just what I want......more work to do that I don't have time for!
