My resident died yesterday. What should I have done differently?
I agree with the previous poster. It was not her call to not code him?? You did fine OP, sometimes there is just nothing we can do.

Drug Legalization
I agree with legalization of marijuana, not cocaine and harder drugs.

Okay, why do ER nurses think they're so cool?
lol...i also laughed...but nervous as to where this thread is heading... :sofahider

Why am I now the enemy?
Our ER nurses dont usually bring the pt. either, it's usually a tech. I'm sure they transport them to ICU though if that's where the pt. it being admitted to.

Why am I now the enemy?
Since I work nights, the admitting doc almost never sees the patient before they come to me, all the orders I spoke of previously are ER orders. The ones for the floor are ordered by the ER doctor and are put on "hold". Im talking about the orders that are not on "hold" and just havent been carried out. We also have emergencies on the floor too, with less help, especially at night! :) Omg i know what you mean about being fed right away. it's really hard when they are very sick and dont even realize it. like we need to keep then NPO and are trying to prep them for surgery fast and they just lay there ******** about how we are "starving them" and "how can we treat them like this?" even after explaining why we are doing what we are doing. if it's an old lady or man i understand but a young a/oX3 pt. who acts like this gets on my last nerve!

Why am I now the enemy?
I work the floor and I completely understand the ER nurse has less time for "fluff". the only time I do get a bit snippy (im also pregnant) is when orders that are ordered hours previously are not done such as antibiotic administration, blood cultures or other labs. Also if there is a CT, MRI or some other test ordered, it's so much easier if they do it before they come to the floor...it makes no sense to get them all settled in then move them back downstairs again! I work night shift so it's all the more irritating to the pt. These are the only times I have probably come off ****** to the ER nurse. otherwise things like a wet diaper or the dirty gown dont bother me a bit! keep doing what youre doing! :)

Can't get a hold of Dr.!
I always try to remember that doctors, just like nurses, are human too. When something like this happens in my hospital I would just call the NP on call if the doctor signed off on NPs, but of course not all facillities have this.

Patients dead from infected IV's....
Of course it's misleading...just look at the source...

Options for RN jobs and motherhood?
This is exactly what I did and it works out great! I worked full time (3 nights a week) up until I had my first baby, then I went back part time (2 nights a week). Working 2 nights a week still gets me health insurance at my hospital and no you do not take a pay cut. You can also go PRN which has a couple options. I am currently pregnant and will maybe go PRN after the baby (4 or 2 nights a month). At my hospital you get a set rate at PRN (usually mid thirtys/hr i think, and also shift diffs) but no health insurance. If youre husband has health insurance for you and your family it doesnt matter though. Good luck!!

I hate what's happening to nursing...
Oh Reenski...you're cute

I hate what's happening to nursing...
I feel exactly the same. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one complaining around here. I dont understand how most of the nurses I work with think that what is happening is ok. I am pregnant so I need maternity insurance but after I have this baby I will be quitting! Id rather pay for private insurance and cut back on household costs than continue to dread going to work and being treated like a waitress/slave.

What do you do if your friend is "THAT patient?"
I cant stand when people act this way! When my FIL was in my hospital, on MY UNIT, my MIL would complain constantly. It got on my last nerve! I would probably give the friend a piece of my mind because that's just how I am. But defriending her is a good idea too :)

another dilemma.. when do i ever learn???
yeah, agree with above posts. I can see your position but in the end you did write "V.O" when in fact you did not get a verbal order.

Patients that make you love your job.

Does Upper Management Even Have a Clue?
that is horrible. i feel for you. when i was new there was a nurse on day shift that loved to make me feel dumb. I dreaded giving report to her in the mornings. really now that i think back, it is because she was insecure in herself, talking down to me as if i was stupid made her feel smart. that is the only reason for bullying, insecurity in the bully. just remember that. I actually did go to my manager about this person and came to find out others were having issues with her too, 2 weeks later she was let go.

Frustrated with having to work
Oh and I also totally feel you about the difficult patients and family members. I smile and bite my tongue all night then come home and scream at my poor husband for any tiny thing! I swear when I know it's my last day of working ever I'm gonna give a difficult patient and/or family member a piece of my mind! I actually laughed when I heard about that flight attendent that grabbed a beer and slid down the slide out of the plane when he had it with difficult passengers! He was just like, "peace out!" haha

Frustrated with having to work
I feel exactly the same as you!!! My husband actually just started a job that I would not have to work and I was sooooo excited! Then guess what...this new job doesnt offer insurance! Ugh! I only work 2 12 hour shifts a week so I also feel like a big whiner when I complain to people. I work night shift, maybe going to days would be better? There is something sooo depressing about leaving your family at dusk! . I agree with a previous poster that the longer time I have between shifts the harder it is to go back. Maybe you should not work all three in a row? I don't know, lets play the lottery!!

Eliminating the Charge Nurse on a Med-Surg unit
I think I may be really lucky where I work! We have a free charge and ratio of 1:4 on our tele unit! It probably won't stay that way for a long time though :/

Eliminating the Charge Nurse on a Med-Surg unit
Wow this sounds like chaos!! I would be looking for a new job. Im sick of more and more demands being placed on us and more and more support being taken away! This cant last.

Maternity Insurance
Thanks for all your replies! I will look into all of them! To answer the questions, no I am not pregnant now, just know I want to have another one in the future. I currently work part-time and receive benefits so if I cannot find what I'm looking for I will stay where I am until I'm done having kids, I'm not dumb . I was just wondering what my options were. Thank you all again!

Maternity Insurance
Ok so I am a nurse and my husband just got a new job where I will FINALLY be able to afford to go PRN which has been our dream as I want to stay home with our kids. However, this new job does not offer insurance (ugh!). We were just going to buy private insurance but then I realized I can't find any private insurance options that offer maternity coverage. I've read a few things about maternity "riders" ? but I can't seem to find much info on it. Does anyone know if I could get private maternity insurance??? BTW I am in Texas. Thanks!!

Can a nurse just be a nurse anymore???
Is anyone else sick of the endless demands placed on nurses? Now they are implementing a new clinical ladder thing at our hospital. If you have over 3 years experience you are a "RN II" and you must get 3 "points" a year to maintain it or you will not get your raise. Examples are "heading a committee to decrease LOS" for... 1 point!! Or becoming a member of professional organization and you must bring in proof of attendence to meetings for... 1 point! This is just ridiculous. Can a nurse just be nurse????? I understand some people love this kind of stuff and by all means give them a great raise and extras! I however don't have time for this crap and do not think it should be mandatory! ughhh!!!!!! :grn::grn::grn:

dayshifters please please please...
What irritates me is when management or other nurses on their high horses get on me for missing a staff meeting that was at 1 pm the day after I worked. Um hello?! If I set up a meeting at 1 AM would you be there?? I think not.

Who is to blame
so what was the outcome?????????

This is like going to war...
I love students, but to be completely honest (which some discourage cuz *gasp* it may make nursing look less than angelic!) I would never choose to precept. ONLY because I am extremely "OCD" with my work at the hospital and I don't feel I would be a good instructor and I need my stuff done on time or I get stressed! This doesn't mean that I dislike having students on the floor, I love helping them out whiel they are working with someone else! :)
