  1. Good for you! I'm an older person but a new nurse. I love nursing, but realize it isn't for everyone. You are never too old to change careers - so long as you are still breathing - go for it!
  2. I use the clip on/retractable for my badge and a breakaway lanyard for my keys.
  3. Limited to no computer access? Definetly don't do it! You may have all the time in the world, but you still need computer access for History - projects, papers, etc. Finish your pre reqs first then start on the nursing core. Now is not the time to combine nursing classes. I suggest getting pre reqs out of the way so you can focus solely on the nursing classes which are a different beast in themselves. You aren't wasting you time by just taking 1 or 2 or 3 pre req classes, but I wouldn't combine them with a nursing core class.
  4. Thank you for your post! I am just now reading it because I am about to take the plunge!:)
  5. Don't do it!!! If you know algebra and are really good at it, then maybe. I'm not and I would suggest that you take it one class at a time and try to have a life. Just my feelings:) You will get done. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!
  6. Sounds like you need all the books for this class - from what the other comments indicate... I suggest going to half.com, if you haven't already purchased your books:)
  7. I haven't worked at that hospital, but have ridden the train past it. The demographics of the people riding the DART train to and from that area is as diverse as the population of the area. Take a ride on the train and you will see that at Park Lane (l think that's the correct stop at Presby) It's a nice area, surrounded by a lot of low rent apartments. Being on the DART rail system, you will get many pts who have no other means of transportation at Presby. You will also get people from "old money" backgrounds there as it's in an area of "old money" retirees and their children. Hope I got my point across w/o offending anyone.
  8. I went through career training once when I was between jobs. Their advice was - whichever person brings up salary first loses. So, like many of the posters here, my advice is to work on the interview and selling yourself, get the job and then they will bring up the issue of money.
  9. You're a guy. I'm not sure that counts. Guys lose weight soo much easier than us women. I swear, I gain weight if I just smell food - let alone the stress hormones that kick in and make us retain water!
  10. It hasn't been nicknamed Hell Centro for nothing:)
  11. If you're doing the table in MSWord, you can fit more on a page by hidding some of the text. You can always open the text or read it on line, but just to keep the total number of pages down, wrap the text or just use the smallest font size.
  12. I'm ready to quit also. Good thing I stayed on. I have been applying to NS for 1.5 years now and have been turned down twice. I'm currently working my full time job and a p/t one at a hospital. I'm ready to get in school and quit the F/T job. It started out great. They let me take off days that I had class and make up my time - working weekends, but now the workload has increased so much, that I'm having to work F/T M-F and at the hospital now on the weekends. I'm getting burned out, but hopefully can last until NS starts in August 09. I pretty sure I got in at the NS at the hospital and can hardly wait to quit my M-F job. I love my boss, but the rest of the politics I can do without.
  13. I got a copy of the HESI study guide from the school library. That's what I used to study from. I passed the 1st attempt. Good luck on your next test!
  14. I call it "hitting the wall" because you just can't read or write another sentence. It's burn out. I'm looking for suggestions as well. I also refer to it as wanting the Staples Easy button. Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
  15. Sounds like you "hit the wall". :banghead:You can do this. Just hang in there and think like previously posted - one day at a time, one day at a time. You're so close to finishing, maybe count the weeks/days/months to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Think about how far you have come. Also, TAKE SOME VITAMINS - if you're not already doing so. They will help you cope with the stress and replenish your body. I'm in a 2 yr ADN program and have heard that, locally, the 4 Yr students don't have as much clinical time as they spend in lecture. Maybe you just need more clinical practice, which you will get plenty of - once you graduate - just get there.
  16. I couldn't stand it any longer. I called Kanora's office. She's out today in Jury Duty and so I called Patsy. Patsy said....Everyone got a letter. I asked - we all got letters weather we got accepted or not? - yes. I may be reading into this, but maybe everyone who applied got in! I'm trying to think positively. Still stressing and getting sick to my stomach. This is ridiculous! My 1st phone call to Patsy- I asked if the letters went out yesterday - they did. I was so nervous, I didn't ask if they were mailed in the am or pm. I live in Dallas, so I hope my letter comes today so I can stop this insanity of obsessing and move onto something productive. Good Luck to us all! Post here as soon as you get your letter!:typing And let us know what the letter says.
  17. Fantastic! Congratulations and good luck to you!
  18. It's D Day or as I like to call it - HAPPY LETTERS BEING MAILED OUT TODAY - Day I'm growing old just waiting on this*&^% letter. My life is on hold. I'm not interested in the classes I took this semester to keep busy. I'm ready to drop everything if I get accepted. I can't focus on work or school. I'm obsessing, I know, but it is what it is and I have to work hard to not think about what if. Good luck to everyone! I hope we all get in. Please post AS SOON AS YOU GET YOUR LETTER, and tell us all the details - where will you be at El Centro or Northlake, any details to us that are still waiting.
  19. I'm sorry to hear about everyone's struggles. It think it's all worth it in the end. I happen to work for some great people in a small law firm. They knew when they hired me that I was working toward becoming a nurse. I only work part time when school is in session. When school is out, I work more than 40 hours to "catch up". Sometimes they want me to work more hours. I do the best I can to juggle both and should be able to hold down this job until I'm done with school. It's a win win for both of us. To anyone working and in school: hang in there, it will be over with soon enough. Get some rest when you can and eat healthy - take care of your body so you can keep going and realize your goal.

    What/where is BCC?
  21. I've been working toward getting into ElCentro/Northlake and am waiting for my acceptance letter - going out 10/15 - 1 week from today! I've also been looking at Brookhaven/Mountain View as a plan B... Both programs have their pluses. El Centro/Northlake entrance is based solely on your GPA for the 5 prereqs. Brookhaven/MV is on a points system and while your gpa does count, the biggest points given are for you HESI score. Also Brookhaven has the extra classes - dosages, pharm, patho, etc in prereq and count toward your points to get in, but once you're in, you only go full time for 16 monts v. 24 months at ElC/NL.
  22. Just my opinion, but I'd go for the ADN before the BSN. You can work on your BSN while working...
  23. If you're in Dallas, I have a copy of the HESI study guide you can have, if not check with your school library. Ours have a copy of the study guide at the reference desk to look at or copy. It helped me and I got a 90 overall on the test and am just a 3.0 B student all the way.
  24. I'm still going crazy here. About to loose all of my hair from bad nerves. I emailed Kanora about something else and she replied in her email that the acceptance letters will be mailed on "the 15th of October..." One more week of obsessing over it... I know I'll be at my mail box everyday harassing my postperson.
  25. Congratulations!
