Hey guys!! I am peds HemOnc RN and have given Etop alot, we never use a filter. This is really strange. I am wondering though, is the filter requirements for mixing in pharmacy or during administration. I know I have ran into questions about filtering before (with other drugs) and when pharmacy investigated... it was for mixing purposes. I wonder if the Etop was or is pre-filtered? Very interesting. Let me know what you think, or what you find out. I will be contacting our chemo pharmacist tomorrow and see what he thinks. Thanks for the info!!

Rectal under 1 year of age, unless they are hem/onc...rectals are big no-no's, all other are oral or axillary. Tympanic are not accurate, it is not only positional for the operator, but if the child has an ear infection it will not read correctly. The pediatrician do not even recommend them for home use to the parents.

First off let me just say, you are in no way alone! I failed my NCLEX the first time I took it, pure nervousness!!!!!!!!!!!! I studied Kaplan and Lippincott the 1st time, which did not make or break me. Your comfort level has almost everything to do with the success of your exam. When I re-took my exam 3 mos later I went through the hospital, the nursing educators had an NCLEX review using Saunders. That was absolutely wonderful. I looked at the amt of time I had been out of school and reminded myself, we all have a learning curve. If we don't use it we loose it. Not to mention I did not want to review something I did not need to know. Kaplan is good, but it basically only teaches test taking skills. I would review Saunders and do the CD for simulated exams. Practice, practice, practice. Then, you will be somewhat prepared and have a better frame of mind. As far as when to take your exam, that lays squarely on your shoulders. Only you can decide if your ready. I had to go into the exam mad (because I let it beat me down the 1st time), determined, and with a plan (a break every 50 questions, or when my nerves could take no more). do a search on the web for nurses station. I get the catalog and I got my scrubs for pinning through them. They were really cute. The top was a mock wrap-around with a tie. The pants were flair legged. It is really amazing how great that white looked in the lights of the auditorium. It was beautiful, we had about 80 at our pinning! How exciting for you, take a bow...you've done good!!!! I graduated last May, savor this time..it goes fast!!!! Good luck in your endevours

Hey Orchid, I am in FL, your lic is posted on the licensee lookup w/ your #, ect. You will receive the original copy and a small card attached to carry w/ you. The original you will need to take to your employer for them to make a copy, you keep the original. Make a file and keep all coorespondence from the state and cert. from any classes that you attend on file. That way when you have to renew (which wont count for the 1st renewal, CEU aren't needed, YEAH!!) you'll have a record of any and all CEU's. You should receive your lic in the mail within the 1st week. But, your lic. # is online, and your employer can use that for verification temporarily. Congrats and Good Luck!!!! Nicunsg

If you are feeling overwelmed...reschedule it. No matter what you'll be alittle nervous going in, but if you are in doubt, reschedule while you can. Try not to overstudy....you finished school...you know this stuff. The tricky part is the mental part of it. You really need to sike yourself out. Make a test day plan, wear tennis shoes with socks and something comfy. I took a break every 50 questions or so, went to the bathroom and splashed water in my face, just to get myself focused. If I was feeling nervous I would take a deep breath, if that didn't work...break time. Stay positive and know the test is mostly mental readiness, you know your stuff have faith. Let us know what happens!!! Good luck Oh, get a CD and practice computer questions, that is really the best way to learn and get comfortable with the CAT.

Mine was the same way when I found out. I went to the BON website to get my answer. Pearson's Vue website had not posted the results yet. I am glad I didn't waste my money. 7.50 isn't it? Oh......most importantly, you passed Congrats!! :balloons:

Pearson states your results are ready in 48 hours, or 2 business days. My license was posted before noon, 2 business days after the exam. Don't pay the money to view a pass result, go to the licensee lookup at MQA website. It is free, Pearson took forever and even after my license was up ...my results w/ Pearson were still pending. I wish you luck and please keep us posted!!!

Oh my goodness 13 pt's?? I spent a great deal of time in school on an ortho floor (lamies, total hips and knees...'nuff said..hehe), these pt's can be a handful and are total cares. Not to mention at risk for DVT's. 13 pt's is alot, have you checked around at other hospitals in your area on their staffing ratios? That staffing grid seems a bit overwhelming even for a seasoned nurse. * Just something to look into :) Check your states staffing laws which are and should be in place to protect your pt's (and you). I wish you luck! Best thing to remember is you should never be to proud or shy to ask any kind of question when it comes to your pt. life or your RN license. Stay humble. How long were you on orientation? I am afraid an assignment like that would make me hehe

We use EMLA cream as well as cold spray. Not all children need 4 people to hold down, but some do require diversion...depending on age, could be a book or bubbles. EMLA cream and cold spray are great things, so thankful to have them. Thing to bear in mind is that just because you are numbing the area does not by any means mean they will remain still. Anxiety plays a huge role, especially if they had a lengthy ER visit before transfer (IV infiltrated) or have never been in the hospital. Some kiddo's do great though and are far more brave than I would be :) (tis better to give than recieve, LOL) I guess the thing to take from this is assess the anxiety, EMLA and cold spray only lessen the anxiety, let the child maintain some sort of control (not whether to insert the IV or not, but what activity they can do to detour them while it is being done).

I am so sorry Luv! I can only imagine how you must feel. I surely hope that you know that everyone here has you in there prayers. I failed the first time and it just frustrated me to no end. Keep your chin up, and do not give up! You know that saying "if at first you don't succeed"! It is an exam, you can do it! You made it this far, you know your stuff! The anticipation is an absolute killer...I know!!!! I wish you the best, I feel you did good!!! :) As far as the results go, here in FL we have the quick results from Pearson (if ya want to call it quick) within 48 hours. I checked that website at midnight, 1 am, 2am, need I go on? LOL!! By 10 am, Pearson still did not have my results. I checked the BON website for lic. lookup, and I saved $7.95, my license was up before my results were up from Pearson. Don't forget to let us know the outcome!! Been praying for ya, you did it!!!! Fingers crossed, I was exactly where you are, it is tough...but with your confidence, I really think you licked that exam!!!

And NicuNsg...some patients on vents desperately NEED to be sedated...they use all their energy fighting...and none healing or breathing effectively ....please don't judge so quickly. [/b] I know that pts on vents need sedation to rest! We teach our families that the vents allow their loved ones' lung to rest and heal!!!???? I am not judging the nurses per say (my mom had a majority of great nurses who looked out for her well-being), just thought it was interesting in my mothers case and the troubles we had with some of the doc's. My mom has reactions to MS and we tried along with a few of the nurses to get the doc's to change the order, which is something I didn't go into all the way and won't. What I was saying was wow thats is scarey my mom was hospitalized there, was just released. Not a hospital that typically gets alot of notarioty. How would you feel if you lived away from a family member, they were hospitalized in critical condition...and then you hear about an article like this? My mom's doing great, it is just scarey to hear about. Sorry, thought I needed to reply to that. I know what vents are actually used for.

Scarey!!!!!!!!!!! My mom was in the ICU there for a month (on a vent, none the less!!). They kept her so snowed and she had bouts of combativeness as well (normal occurence for a vented pt). I had to email the story, thanks for the info!!!!!!!

I was called in for jury duty summer of my 2nd year. I filled out the excusal form and sent in a letter from the Dir. of my nursing program. She explained in detail about the heavy load and how difficult it would be to make up, attendance policies, and federal grant guidelines. I will tell ya, I had to call to see if it was excused, which it was. I graduated in May and received a notice for jury duty for June, LOL. They will let ya slide, but you won't be forgotten.

Good luck, I know you can do it!!!! Just keep your anxiety in check and take breaks (every 50 questions or PRN). Don't forget to wear something red and eat something salty!!!!!!! Also, don't study a day or 2 before the test. Make sure you let us know how it went, I'll be thinking about ya!!!

Info for anyone in FL (if not check to see if your state does this)!! When you apply for licensure you use your mailing addy, which upon passing the exam, gets posted on the net. BUT, if you look at your license..they want your address of practice. You can either mail it or electronically correct the info on line, which does not show your home addy. The only addy that will show is your place of practice, but you must furnish the info. If you are a traveler...use a PO Box. Just alittle info, in case you didn't know.
