Our float pool was expanded from around 25 nurses to about 100 now. Some floors in our hospital regularly have two and three needs for nurses on day and evening shifts. The float pool also cuts down on overtime. Any nurse working overtime will be sent home and replaced with a float nurse, if one is available. The decrease in overtime costs was so much, that everyone in the hospital was able to get a larger raise last year. At this point I don't think my hospital could even function without float nurses.

I have sweaty hands all the time also. I personally don't care if people notice. If someone asks I just tell them that my hands sweat all the time. Getting gloves on can be tricky when your hands are wet. I always carry some baby powder in my pocket so I can sprinkle some on before I put gloves on.

Every week. Double on Sunday, 8 hours Monday, Double on Wednesday. Love it!

We do for IV heparin. 2 RNs are supposed to calculate the weight based heparin independently and be present when the IV pump is set. No second RN needed for sq. Our standard sq does in 5000 units, which comes in a one use vial.

Thanks, I took the NCLEX last Wednesday and found out on Thursday that I had passed. I already had my real license before I started my job this week. Turns out the NCLEX wasn't that bad. I just had 75 questions.

Well, I got my temporary license in the mail today and am taking the NCLEX next week. Yay!

There are two large hospitals in my town. One requires a one year contract for new grads and the other does not. There is no pay incentive for signing the contract. Basically it just states that if you quit before the end of your first year the hospital may not hire you back if you want to return later.

Has anyone who graduated this spring received their temporary license from West Virginia yet? My classmates who were hired at St. Mary's in Huntington had their start dates pushed back from 5/26 to 6/1 because no one has received a license to be able to start as a GN yet. I know my classmates who are working in Kentucky already have their temporary licenses and NCLEX scheduled.

When we were learning injections and IVs our instructors said we could practice on each other if we wanted, but no one wanted to. During clinicals a few nurses on the floor have let students practice sticking IVs them. Every semester we got a bag full of supplies so we could practice on our own either at home or in the nursing arts lab. I got suringes, needles, foleys, NG tubes, etc to take home with me. I don't see why there would be any liability is giving needles to students. I can go to the corner pharmacy and buy them in the diabetic supplies isle.As to practicing injections on your own children: if you feel confident in your skills as a nursing student and a parent, then go for it. As a parent you give the informed consent.

I go to school in WV, and of my class of 84 only ten people or so have not received job offers. Most of those are people applying to hospitals out of state. Hospitals around here started interviewing in December for May grads.

I don't see anything wrong with letting him try on the SCDs. People are curious about the things that are happening to their loved ones in the hospital. Sounds like he provided you with several opportunities to practice your patient teaching skills.

A car is definitely somewhere on the list, but I really want to get Lasik. Hopefully by the end of the year I won't have to wear glasses/contacts anymore.

Just to update this thread for anyone else who may be looking. I am an RN nursing student graduating in May. I was just offered a job a St. Mary's. Base pay is $21.60 with night and weekend differential of $0.65. Health insurance is available after 3 months and 100% of the premium is covered by the hospital.

I work at a Catholic hospital, so I don't think there have been any memos about what seasonal greeting to use. There are Christmas trees up all over the hospital. I personally am atheist, so I tend to just stick with my year round "have a good day." I'm not bothered by anyone wishing me a merry christmas, and I usually just reply "you too."

Was there any job description at all? At my hospital, resource nurses are called the nurses in the float pool. They fill in on almost any hospital floor with low staffing levels.

You didn't mention it in your post, so I'll ask an obvious question. Has anyone talked to the doctor directly? If my own health were at risk I would remind the doctor to put her used needles in the sharps container every time I saw her with a one in hand.

I don't really know that much about it. My aunt is a hygenist in the USPHS. She just came back from a deployment in Micronesia, but usually works in a prison. She loves it, and makes an excellent living.

I don't know that you want to move to West Virginia, but I got into my ASN program straight away. I took all the pre-reqs along side my nursing courses.

There is one girl in my nursing class who for religious reasons always wears skirts. I know of two nurses at my hospital who also always wear skirts. One in her late 40s the other early 60s. I assume both do so for religious reasons, but I have never asked either of them.

We have all white scrubs at my school. The scrubs can only be bought from one store in town, so there isn't a choice of finding a thicker white scrub pant. I wear white boxers, and I think it is the best choice. In some lighting you can see the underwear outline, but that is going to be true no matter what color you wear.
