Problem w/RN's & CT's on clinical day
I didn't read the entire post, so forgive me if I repeat something. I am a nursing student and I have had my share of the grunt work as some would call it. At first I was very frustrated and felt like I was just being dumped on. This semester I changed my attitude and willingly provided all the grunt work with a smile and a good attitude. I even find myself circulating around when im not busy and asking the other nurses if they have anything I might could help them with. I've even made lunch runs. Funny thing happened this semester. Nurses started hunting me down to come see the cool stuff. I even had the opportunity to do chest compressions during a code. I'm wise beyond my semester and it really has paid off. Once all the crap is out of the way the nurses are pretty good about letting you experience he things thy normally don't have time for. It's a scratch my back I'll scratch yours type of relationship.

Personality question for the guys (and any gals who might have an opinion)
I like straight shooters too. Especially when it comes to my instructors. It's been a weird experience for me being a mans man in a female dominated field. I haven't had any disrespect or anything, in fact all the people who have worked with me have been very kind. Whats odd for me is being on the other side of the fence and getting special treatment I guess you could say for being a male. But it's not because I command some superior complex of masculinity or anything. I think it's because im just the odd ball, and people seem to want to root for the underdog. My nursing class is comprised of all types of personalities. I think that is what makes nursing so unique. My mother in law for instance, ( also an RN) is the charge nurse for an emergency department. She had a filthy mouth, a twisted sense of humor and quick wits. She developed most of this after working in the ER, because it helps her deal with some of the stuff she sees on a daily basis. Some patients love it, others think she is being rude. so to answer your question... Just be yourself, and the best nurse you can be. You will never get along with everyone, and you are going to have some patients and coworkers who really appreciate and adore your personality, and those who get rubbed the wrong way by it. thats just life.

No She/he Did Not!!!
No she didn't just run up to me to ask me what telepathy was... I held a straight face, walked my fellow student over to the telemetry monitors, pointed at them and said " So, your patient can read minds?"

Chemistry 2006/ 2007 Club***
I'll go with not so much. A&P is a fundamental for nursing. I would devote as much time as I could to this subject. Chemistry is important, and useful, however for me it required a lot of studying which was a chore for me since I wasn't really interested. If I were you I would take them separately.

Howdy all
Yeah Im worried about the same things. Im glad I found this forum. I's hard to find out who will be in my class until the orientation since most students take their pre-reqs at diffrent times and with diffrent teachers.

What is the funniest thing that you have seen while working?
haha thats hillarious. Someone I know had a funny story during a psych rotation. She was invited to go into the board room to discuss a patients case who had been admitted. The doctor began reading the patient notes and casually recited out the sentence "...says he wants to stick his **** in a fan blade." The room fell silent and this nursing student was literally biting he rlip trying not to laugh. This was her first day on the psych floor so she wasn't sure if this was just a normal day or what. Moments later they bring the patient in to dicuss the case, my friend still present at this point, and once again the doctor questioned him on his curiosity of wanting to put his manhood in a fan blade. The patient immediately started defending what he had said saying that every person in that room had wanted to stick their private parts in a fan blade but just wasn't admitting to it.

Howdy all
Hi, My name is Brian and I am 27. I have just been accepted into a ADN program. I start in August. Any other male students have any advice for me? I am not sure if any other men made it into the program, or even applied for that matter. I won't offically get to met the rest of my class until the orientation in July. My wife is a R.N. so I am hoping I'll have somewhat of a leg up when it comes to learning the material, but other than that, I am pretty wet behind the ears and I have no clue what to expect. I've been browsing these forums and trying to learn all I can. Im lookign foward to this journey ahead, but at the same time Im pretty scared too.

First day on the Labor and Delivery unit
I start nursing school in the fall, and I am hoping that I get to be a part of the OB experience. I saw my wife give birth to my son, but I was in a daze the entire time and things moved really fast. Im glad you got to experience some stuff.

A new (pregnant) nursing student
My wife was pregnant in nursing school. The instructgors and hospital staff were supportive. There were times during clinicals wher she would have to leave the room when x-rays were being performed, or a couple of times there were contact precautions with certian conditions. She had our son April, but graduation was in June. The school let her go back and finish her last round of clinicals during the summer, and even let her walk for the pinning ceremony, even though technically she hadn't met all the requirements just yet.

Low Math Skills - Please Advise!
Math is just one of those things you have to do. I had to start in the prep courses in college, and I enede dup dropping my pre-algebrba class because I felt like I just wasn't getting it. Truth was, I wasn't really applying myself as much as I should. Just find the courage to do the prep courses, and don't look at it as a death sentence ( although at times it feels like it) I am in college algebra now, and I'm pulling consistant A's. I even pipe in now and then to answer questions the instructor asks. Somewhere between intermediate algebra and this summer all the algebra clicked in my brain. Now I just have to tackle statistics

Best study advice for A&P
The best advice bar far to to apply the information you are given. My professor was one of the greatest I had during my whole two years of college and his tests were actually in essay form. The quesitons pertained to true to life patients. The body parts and functions seem tedious at first, but when you start to look up disease states or deviations from homeostasis, and putting the puzzle together, it makes it simple as pie. My wife has been a RN for over two years now, and I still amaze her with my phyisiology knowledge. Another great tip for any class, is to teach the material to a family memeber, friend or another student. You retain about 20% of wwhat you memorize, and about 90% of what you teach.

Chemistry 2006/ 2007 Club***
I am in chem right now and so far it is eveything I heard it was going to be, hard and boring. The whole class runs like a math course for the first few chapters. Right now we are learning the naming of compunds, and how to draw dot structures. I never knew that little periodic table of elements had so much to it. I made a B on my first test, and we were told to enjoy the high grades because the worst is yet to come.

*microbiology Summer 07*
Micro was one of my not so good classes, but it was tailored towards alllied health so it made it somewhat interesting. Here are some tips you can use that might make labs easier. If you are being graded on a pure culture, and you have a few colonies of "extra" bacteria, just scrape them off, might be considered cheating, but I wasn't going to waste 2 more dys of lab to grow another plate. When we were being graded on slide presentation, instead of dying the bacteria with crystal violet and saphron , if you know it is gram pos. or gram neg, just dye it the color it is supposed to be, that way any stray bacteria that might be a diffrent color won't accept the stain. You will have a perfectly blue, or red slide. and it saves you 45 seconds:lol2:
