  9. Cheers my comrad I feel exactly the same , those who do know talk and whisper those who don't know speak cruelly of ANY who is different than them Care is care , I am a nurse , that is my job and most of the time I love it when those who don't aren't getting in the way with their own uneasy prejudice :)
  10. I cannot see why any hospital would prevent anyone from visiting unless the person was harmful to the patient or causing some untoward response. Gay , straight or otherwise..
  11. Always protect yourself first this may end up being nothing but you need to take care of you There is no way , the DON , can know if ALL the residents are free of disease UNLESS she had them all tested on admit, for ALL the diseases , which I doubt happened. Take care of you kid, your young and healthy , stay that way
  12. Comfort measures to me are just that to keep ones last moments here as comfortable as possib
  13. I agree , Drs too are very overworked as our we The fact they tried to get more Drs is to be commended the fact they were unable to very very sad
  14. Yikers I think I would go with the call to the state anonymously , this is not only a dangerous practice but which of you out there would want your family member is such a situation?
  15. Very very scary I agree, if they want to pass the meds then go to school and learn it all , not just mechanics of it
  16. I just relocated from Southern Cal to Northern cal I can't imagine a whole nation apart You are right its EXACTLY why you feel less confident despite the arrows , you know you have worked hard to get where you are ,and will continue to , amidst the sillyness around you STAND TALL
  17. in my neck of the woods we do 12 hours shifts 630 to 7 we work 3 days a week which is considered full time some of the floors work the traditional 8 hour shifts as you described though[ As I've said before, I'm just starting out and I hope to start nursing school this Spring 2005. My mom has been a nurse for most of her life, and before she retired in '98, all the shifts in this part of the country were the same as they have been for the last hundreds of years (OK, so I am exaggerating ). When she left, it was basically 7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM, 11PM-7AM. At that time, they were just starting 12 hours shifts, but mostly for those who wanted to work the weekend. They were like 7P-7A for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Now, I'm looking at the hospital shifts, and I don't see too many hospitals doing the 7-3pm, 3-11pm, and 11-7am shifts. I'm wondering if these types of shifts have become antiquated, replaced with 12 hour shifts. How does that work usually? If you work three 12 hour shifts a week, is that considered full-time and you receive the same pay you would for a 40 hr. week? I just wondering how that works in other areas, or if the 12 hour shift is becoming more of the norm or if there still are any holdouts from the previous shifts that were so common in nursing. BTW, I've found this board to be an invaluable asset. Sometimes I read it and think to myself "exactly what I am getting in to?" and other times I truly believe that this is the job for me, the job I've always wanted to do. Thanks everyone! Katherine
  18. I know exactly what you mean , I too was out for a bit , what I thought was a short three years from patient care due to injury , only to return , to a new hospital and treated as if I was the idiot, simply due to changes in location and terms , it took me quite a while to catch on to the fact that these "kids" were simply using term I hadn't used before coming for a different location Southern from Northern I agree what I needed was more ability to be asseretive when I wasn't but change for some comes harder, I had moved from my home of 30 years, returned to patient care after being gone for 3 years and experienced a death the first 6 months I was in my new home, so to say the least I was shaky on many ground. Hang in there there and keep your chin up , know what you know and have the confidence in yourself you know is there
  19. I too am somewhat of an early bird so to speak and it makes me very angry when staff comes walking in 15 minutes late as if its not any big deal. I think its rude to the rest of us and they disrupt report and usually we have to begin again , which I don't think we should, to me being on time is as important as any other aspect of nursing .
  20. I can't say I feel guilty when I call in sick I used to long ago but not now I realized that by going in sick it often caused other to get sick and that wasn't good plus I just wasn't good for my patients when I was feeling ill myself I try not to abuse my sick time though and only use it if I truly am sick
