What state do you live in? Some unions are local to the state, and others cover multi-state regions. You may live in an at-will state, but there are federal laws to protect you from being dismissed for attempting to unionize. Whatever specific union is in your area would be able to give you tips. Unfortunately, you cannot just join a union. Your options are to go work at a workplace that is already union or unionize your workplace

The keywords here being a union hospital. I'm a broken record right now, but I can't believe that there are still non-union hospitals anywhere. For god's sake nurses, organize!

I think you'll be fine as a new grad. However, make sure L&D is where your heart truly lies. I was positive that was where I wanted to end up, but ended up loving postpartum way more. I absolutely loathed charting fetal heart strips etc, but I love being able to have time to really chat with the new moms, teach breastfeeding, help cuddle the babies, teach basics like burping, etc. So just keep that in mind- otherwise, best of luck!

First, you need to organize. All the individual nurses cannot do what a labor union can. I'm so happy to be union, particularly now. There is a team of people who have done nothing, full-time but advocate for more PPE , and keeping our employers accountable for all aspects of this pandemic As a result of our union, we had a major victory here in MN three days ago- A state law passed that says any HCW, who has direct patient contact is entitled to full workman's comp if they are out of work for covid, either confirmed or suspected quarantines. This is a huge victory- previously, all of our hospitals were arguing we were not entitled to this (as are most places around the country) as we would not be able to prove that we got it at work The law says that the employers have to prove we didn't get it at work. And if they cannot prove it, they must pay out full compensation for the total length of time we are out of work I'm not saying anyone shouldn't speak up- I still make calls a minimum of 3x week to all my local politicians, national, and my governor.. But for God sake's people, if you are not union, start working on that too I can promise you that at the end of all of this, all the union nurses are going to come out on the other side much better than non-union

I think there is a mentality shift that needs to happen in nursing before more of us start to stand up for ourselves and demand better working conditions. Just look at all the responses on here from the martyr types who are pushing that harmful "you signed up for this you should be willing to die for you patients" mentality as long as that persists, why would we demand better for ourselves? I'm a angel-martyr-healer- please, fetch me my cross Sincerely though, it's incredibly frustrating- I'm not an angel, I'm a highly educated highly-skilled professional who is compassionate, works hard, and expects good pay and protection in return. Love it. It’s just really really sad the amount of people who have drank the kool-aid on anti-union propaganda I’ve worked at four different hospitals over 10 years, and one was non-union. The difference is night and day. The number of crap new policies and scheduling changes my non union job pulled just because they could was stunning . Since then I’ve never considered even interviewing at non-union hospitals

This is perfection- I'm pretty sure the ultimate definition of caring is keeping people alive phn-RN seems to think it's black and white- and if catching sepsis is so basic and technical, how is that so many nurses I've taken report from sit there casually discussing how they had a really great conversation with their patient and then just as casually mention the patient's low BP, tachycardia, and extremely low temp? I also think you nailed it when you discussed this nurse as responding to their needs primarily Clearly this is one of those nurses that is so wrapped up in their identity as a "healer" the idea that this can be just a job to many of us is completely foreign

oh for the love of........First of all, you know nothing about me and how I practice. Second, you know what my experience is with you "healer" types? Most of you are so busy doing backrubs you miss the crucial signs your patient is circling the drain I've been a nurse for ten years and I've had to save patients who were showing signs of SIRS or straight-up sepsis more times than I can count from nurses like you. While I'm running boluses and ordering labs, y'all are getting lavender soaked cotton-balls See I value my job, my patients and myself enough to NOT make it my whole identity. I despise the whole nurse as martyr and angel idea. As Dorthy Day once said "Don't call me a saint- I don't wish to be dismissed that easily."

I'm really sorry if you have made your profession your entire identity. Many of us have not I am a wife, mother, sister, aunt daughter and friend. I am somebody. I have an amazing life, family, and friends, and I have a lot to live for. How DARE you tell any of us we're supposed to sacrifice all for our freaking jobs. That's all it is at the end of the day. Amazing benefits, but most importantly if I ever get called to my manager for an investigation I have a union rep that goes with me and asks all the questions, demands assurances on my behalf etc happened to me once for a fairly minor incident and the union rep with all the contract power did all the talking, had my manager agree I could not be called on again re: it and got her to sign a contract that it would not reflect poorly on me in the future. that one was easy and it wa more about asking about and incident that mainly involved another nurse that is invaluable also, right now with lack of PPE our unions reps are basically working on that issue constantly for us- much more power and resources to do so then non union

Dang, this is all terrible. I know I sound like a broken record on all of these discussions related to this issue, but for god's sake everyone organize your workplaces if they're not already union. And if they are union and not doing anything, raise **** with the leadership.
