  1. I work in LTC and the CNA's get a bonus if they are on time for work, if they cover their shift when they are not going to be there, and something else but I can't remember. The nurses do not get this bonus every month just the CNA's.
  2. There are some treatments that the CNA's do. I always check and make sure that they are done before I initial the tx sheet. I would not initial if I could not check to make sure it was done. CNA's where I work mostly just do the nystatin powder, and some creams. I make it a habit of popping into the room when they are doing cares and see that it is done. That also gives me chance to see if the tx is working or if the tx needs to be changed.
  3. All of our residents have cork boards in their rooms above the bed. Recently we put little cards up on their boards. We drew stick people or put a P for Pal, H for Hoyer. Now when I go into a room I know if I can help that person or if I need to go get help. My CNA's know that I will help whenever I am available and they have no problem asking me to help with a lift. If I have the time and not on my way to do something important I will stop and help. When you have a few extra minutes and you see an aid going into a room ask them if you can go with them and help. They will appreciate the extra hands and after a while they will see that you really want to be a helping hand and they will appriciate the help that you can give.
  4. I once had one of my family members in the hospital and they started acting like a spoiled brat. When the poor nurse left the room I had a not so nice talk with them. They were only in the hospital a couple of days and probably could have managed at home but just wanted someone to wait on them. Once their nurse mother got ahold of them they were more than happy to behave.
  5. First off I am so sorry for the loss of your father. I went through a situation a couple of years ago. I was in a car accident. The other driver was about the age of my oldest daughter. He was high on meth ran a stop sign doing 60 miles an hour and I hit him on the drivers side. He took out a power pole. When I got out of my car I got to the guy and realized he was not going to live. I was so devasted that as a nurse I could not do anything to save this kid. It took 6 months of counseling before I could go back to work. It was so devastating because as a nurse I kept feeling there should have been something I could have done to save this kid. I learned alot about myself and about why I felt the way I did. I am in no way comparing the horrible loss that you have experinced to mine. But just letting you know that with counseling and a good support system you will return to nursing with a whole new perspective. May you feel the warmth of Gods love at this time.
  6. The most I have witnessed is 9. All in sets of 3 and at least one of each set of 3's was very unexpected. Over the last three months we have had 9 deaths where I work.
  7. Takeone...that is the way I read it also until I reread it. It seems she was approached at the hospital and gave the lady a tylenol. She was at home when she posted on the board. I was drawing the same conclusion as you. But people don't have to be so rude it would have been far better to just explain the post.
  8. I carry a small spray bottle of my husbands favorite perfume. Sometimes when I get off work I do a quick spritz of water on my curls scrunch it a little and spray on some perfume. He really like when I do this. He tells me what a "sexy" nurse nurse I am.
  9. I have on occasion bought my shift of NA's pizza for a job well done. We are in the same boat. Went to my administrator for a CNA who went above and beyond and asked for a bonus for her and was told they could not do that because then they would have to do it for everyone. So, I went out and bought her a gift certificate to her favorite restuarant. I have also bought things with my own money to give to my CNA's for a job well done. I keep koozies, lanyards, gift cards and other little things that did not cost much for just these kinds of occasions. Such small things goes a long way. I have never called a CNA when we were short who would not come in and work when I am there.
  10. Please disregard the previous post. Thanks for the correction.
  11. Can u say HIPPA violation. I am not sure what ur job is but if u didn't have direct care for this patient u my be setting yourself up for a big problem. If u did not have a medical need for accessing the patient records that is a HIPPA violation. Since u are not a nurse I am betting that u did not have any need to access information on this patient.
  12. I had breast augmentation when I was working LTC. I was back to work in 1 week. I was pushing my med cart, transferring pts. and all my other duties. Good luck with your surgery. I have never regretted it. My self esteem and confidence has greatly improved since my surgery.
  13. You are not the only one. I wanted to become an RN after getting my LPN. I have been an LPN for almost 10 years and the desire to become an RN just isn't there anymore. I work in Urgent Care and I love my job. We were just discussing this very same thing a week ago at work. I am happy where I am and where I am going. Sure I would make more money as an RN but I would also have more student loans to pay off and the stress of working and going back to school just is not enough incentive for me.
  14. I know I will probably get flamed for being so blunt. I get phone calls all day long asking some of the most inane and stupid questions. Do people really not have any common sense any more. I hope that if you do get into the nursing program that you begin to use some critical thinking skills. Even before I became a nurse I always tried to think things out before calling the doctor's office to ask questions. Did you really give any thought to this subject before you came here and asked this (IMHO) dumb question.
  15. I work in an urgent care that is connected to our hospital. We see upwards to 120 people per day we are open 8am-8pm. The sad thing is that most of the cases we see are things that could wait until the next day for the PCP. We also get people who come in wanting a physical (sports, yearly, etc.) they are not seen in our UC due to the time that it takes to see these pt. It is not like they just found out today they need a sports physical and I am sorry but that is not what UC and Stat clinics were designed for. We help them make an appt. Urgent Care and Stat Care is being used like convenient care. I understand how frustrated the ER nurses are when they get chronic problems coming in that should be seen by their PCP. We do not get the chart and we do not know the patient like their PCP but they will come to us even when the PCP has openings. When we were kids and even when my kids were little we did not run to the doctor all the time. We gave our kids tylenol for a fever. People will come into the UC and tell the provider exactly what they want for meds be it antibiotic, pain med, etc. then they get mad because they may not get an antibiotic. We also have people who will come in 2 or 3 days in a row knowing that we do not have the same providers every day and if one didn't give them what they wanted then maybe the next one will. Some of the things that people come in for are just plain stupid stuff i.e. I woke up an hour ago and have a fever. No I did not take anything for it. I need such and such drug because the fever is not going away. To that we just think "You can't fix stupid"
  16. This really is not about protecting her child from the threat of disease. Where did she get the immunization. I work in a clinic and those immunizations are not cheap. If she did not pay for it and just took it from somewhere it is stealing. I have issues with that alone. I have to pay for my childrens immunizations why should she be able to steal them and get them for free. And people wonder why our insurances are so high.
  17. Overheard a lab tech at the clinic where I work talking to the Dr. about a speciman a woman brought in. They said she told me this came out with her pee. I said let me see. I could not believe my eyes when I looked in the cup and saw a slip sinker. I started laughing so hard. When the lab tech asked me what was so funny, I told her what it was and that it was used for weight when you go fishing. The next thing out of my mouth was, How the hell did she get that in her bladder to pass it with her pee anyway. Still don't have the answer to that one.
  18. Yes, I have called in sick because of my pet. I called and explained the situation to my supervisor and she was very understanding. He is a yorkie and got bit in the head by our Lab. It was very touch and go for a few days but he did recover. I am very glad that I have a very understanding supervisor.
  19. The most memorable and best loved gift I received is my Florence Nightengale lamp. My husband and children bought it for me and it has a little candle in it. It looks just like the one we used at our graduation. I also love my Littman stethescope.
  20. There are a few things that as an LPN I would be concerned with: Assures that nursing staff practices within their scope of practice...I am not sure that is something within the scope of practice for an LPN. In most states LPN's are not allowed to triage. I did not learn phlebotomy in LPN school. I was taught on the job by another nurse. Not saying it is not something that an LPN can't do just it is not something that we are taught in school. This sounds like a job that would be more appropriate for an RN.

I have been tweezing the hair around my nipples since the birth of my first child 23 years ago and have never had a problem. My girlfriend had electrolysis and it worked great for her.
  22. You sure do need some help. Please PM me. I went through the same thing with one of my sons and found a great program that does not cost an arm and a leg and is a great program.
  23. Depending on what state the op is in the employer may feel obligated to report her to the BON because she was terminated due to pt safety issues. I just went before the BON in my state when I was terminated from a job and it had nothing to do directly with pt care. The board finally ruled that there really was no basis for my license to be reported. You may not hear anything for a while. I did not know that I had been reported to the BON until 9 months after I was terminated and received a letter from the BON. If you want to know more then pm me and I will explain in furter detail.
  24. Try your local HUD office. They may help with your mortgage for a month or even 2. I am so sorry for all that you are going through. You may even try contacting your mortgage company and explain your situation they may let you miss a couple of payments and just add them on at the end of the mortgage. Good luck and my prayers are going out to you and your boys.
