What do teachers think about school nurses?
I could have written this post myself! I literally thought about the “allteacher” thing yesterday lol! I’d love to know how they really feel bc I get LOTS of mixed emotions on how I’m perceived.

End of Year Prep
Does anyone have a list of supplies they make sure to keep stocked they’d like to share ???? lol. And/or a good checklist for school nurses for end of year? Also, do y’all keep huge filing cabinets of individual students records? Or keep them on a year by year basis? When I got here the back of my office is full of filing cabinets of all students individual folders with stuff in it, I’ve heard others say they don’t do that but keep the year paperwork together for so many years.

Field Trips
Thanks guys! I have two written policies in the handbook- lice and med administration, nothing specific to field trips. I appreciate all the input. Previous years I was putting their field trip dose in an envelope and sending that way, but this year I found out that was not right so I’ve been sending my blister packs (how our meds have to come to the school) with a “trained” teacher to give it. Idk any different so I’ve trained those that have students with seizures on how to give diastat, diabetes, inhalers, Epis, glucagon. If there is a reason I cannot do this, PLEASE let me know so I can present it to someone. I don’t go on any field trips bc it’s only me for my county with no sub nurses.

How do you all handle sending medications during Field Trips?

Bed Bugs- parents don't think it's a big deal
Yes. I second who said the above about bedbugs not being a medical hazard as they do not carry disease. Short of secondary infection due to bug bites.... I’m highly irritated bedbugs come to the nurse. They are NOT a human infestation, but an environmental one. I am no exterminator and I am NOT qualified to ID pests.... I refuse to say it’s a bedbug, I’ll admit it looks like one. But they can google and ID the bug as well as I can. With all that said, I do have to deal with them. ?

Happy Nurses' Week, my loves!
Not a “hey how ya doing”, “thanks”, “kiss my ***”.... NOTHING. I’m trying to NOT take it personal ?

How many students do you see per day?
For the first half of the year (Aug - Dec) I’ve seen 4334 (including daily meds) and 10 classroom head checks ?... about 89 days worth of school... I see pre-k through 12th

Swollen fingers
Thank y’all for the information. Makes me feel a lot better. And I agree, I am so much less sympathetic about stuff that happen at home. ??♀️

Swollen fingers
I’ve had a TON recently... some happening at home over the weekend and then coming in first thing Monday, others while they are here. I’ve only had one this year that I was pretty sure was broken, but honestly jammed, dislocated, sprained- they can all look the same!! How do y’all know when to ice and watch or send on? I feel like they all want a big production ?

Where is your office located within the school?
My office is right behind the main office. Right by the 2 counselors and social worker. Centered between the Elementary on one side and the Middle/High off the other.

What's the oddest thing you've done for a student?

I’ve hit a new low...
I was doing frozen sponges in a zip-lock, great for the little ones because it doesn't melt. But I have pre-K through 12 in ONE building so they kept getting taken and not returned. So when I ran out, I didn't put forth the effort anymore... they now have to go get their ice from the cafeteria. It seemed to have cut back on the popularity of the icepack - a tiny amount, but some none-the-less ?

That annoying time of year
Slightly off topic. I am new commenting but have, since I started school nursing back in 2015, have read you guys posts to get ideas and understandings because I was not trained when I started. (Thank yall!!!) The old SN had to leave before I could come. Do you guys write excuses for student to miss PE and such? Shouldn't that come from an MD? I had one come to me this morning asking me to write him an excuse for PE because he was doing drills in JROTC and hurt one of his elbows while army crawling... When he first presented to me he voiced concern that he had broken his elbow (eye roll)...
