MSN in Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality
Hi RNallison, I was just wondering what you ended up doing? Could you give us an update? Awesome thanks !!-E

What did YOU do?
Hi ! I would say apply to positions in the quality management (QM) dept to get in the door. I successfully transitioned from staff nurse primary care to performaonce improvement specialist in QM. I love my Job and the impact it makes. My work exp has ED, primary care, psych, DM care management. Education with a BSN, MSN in process in nursing informatics. Volunteer to do special projects that would improve your unit I did and that project became the thing that got me this job. My interviewer even asked how does a staff nurse have time to do all this and do her duties? how are things? What did you end up doing? I'd love to hear an update

Quitting My Job: Returning My ID Badge- Should I be Petty?
Drive overnight if need be You need to return your badge it’s a must and write a proper resignation letter which will go into your permanent HR file. There is an exit interview they must give you cobra forms from HR, resignation letter Google it if need to. Otherwise you’d be branded as un-rehire able which will affect future job opportunities. OK good luck always leave on a positive note nursing is a small yet big field you don’t know who knows whom. So don’t burn all your bridges on your way out. I once left a job bitterly yet wrote a beautiful resignation letter and guess What 3 yrs later I was rehired back into the corporation in a different branch because of that. So don’t burn bridges!

LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC) Nursing Program
BUMP! WOW 10 years after my first post after graduating from LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC). Thank you to everyone for keeping this thread alive and going. Congratulations to all the graduates and I'm glad this post was of help to many of you as back then there wasn't much information about LAGCC so I made a detailed post on it. Obviously by now all requirements have changed so check the school's nursing website for the most updated requirements. Here's a quick update of what I'm up to: I Got my CUNY Lagcc ADN in 2011, SUNY Stony Brook BSN 2015, CUNY SPS MSN: Nursing informatics working on it now and a future nurse informaticst. Now working as RN in Primary Care clinic based inside a hospital. I hold a certification in CDCES formerly known as the CDE Certified diabetes educator and do rock climbing and make watercolor brush paintings in my spare time! Oh geez I now am collecting an alphabet soup of initials after my name just like my professors.

Radiologist tech vs Nursing
my thoughts is that nursing RN is way more flexible theres so many specialties than radiologist tech. just go to indeed type in nursing jobs vs. radiologist tech and salary is also much higher too

Multiple applications to ADN program
eh? you won't get 7-8 ID numbers you do your prerequisits at one school then you apply to as many nursing programs as you want after you completed the prerequisites.

Is nursing really for me?
Do what you like? if you don't know what that is then take a year off try working in different areas of fields that you might want to work in that's what I did. Unfortunately nursing is not for the undecided, forced by family expectations, etc because even if you did pass the classes and boards you'd likely not be working as a nurse because you'd hate it and still end up doing something else. I know someone like that. I worked as a temp doing odds and ends to pay bills and self studied: as paralegal 6 yrs, Failed as: administrative assistant, legal secretary, executive assistant because I was too disorganized and forgetful myself so couldn't help someone else get their life in order that was a no brainer, artist I sold lotsa art but income was too unstable I would starve a few months feast a month of so etc I was too scared that I couldn't pay rent and food but lotsa fun, computer programmer (I didn't last past coding hello world) that was that, and then I found nursing and here I am 10 years later with ADN, BSN, certified in CDCES (formerly CDE certified diabetes educator) and now working on MSN in nursing informatics AND still able to pursue my artwork now that I have a steady paycheck I can actually afford to buy art supplies and down time that's what I do make and sell art.

HIPAA violation?
uh yes it is a HIPPA violation a major one. She better delete that video fast and hope she didn't post it online nowhere because once it spreads theres no taking it back. I just finished studying the topic on HIPPA and ethics. If this leaks out she can get fired and even have her license in danger of being pulled, along with fines, and other criminal charges. You? that's an ethical decision that is up to you to make ... report her there will be serious reprecusssions for her but if you don't she'll continue doing it. etc and etc. I don't know what to tell you to do. Maybe the community has some advice but ultimately its your decision

Pros and cons of RN clinic nursing?
in my clinic MAs reports to RNs and documents it as so we do oversee them and write them up if a verbal warning doesn't work. I tell you the MA to report to me if vitals are out of range once and 2nd time you don't do it I tell you again 3rd time I catch you you're written up and if its a serious out of range vital such that I need to write and occurrence report you the MA is getting written up on first violation. OK BACK TO TOPIC I work in a primary care clinic, what I do is triage, in person and by phone, and by secure email messages, conduct nurse visits to educate manage DM and HTN issues, give vaccinations, educate on chronic diseases, using motivational interviewing techqniques to empower patients to manage their own disease processes, respond to clinic emergencies, discharge patients, occasionally transfer patients to ER, or floor admission which is a hassle, I do the occasional EKG and venipuncture just to maintain my skillsets and get street credits as this way my MA and PCAs know that this nurse knows her job and their jobs too and if need be can do theirs and know if they are cutting corners, I administer meds PO or injectables meds as ordered, I double triple check the orders as residents are doctors in training so I'm afraid they'll make a mistake and I'll be the one losing my license. I do not involve myself with office politics or kissing up because I believe that my skills speak for itself and make it very clear I am not interested in such games by ignoring all gossips and doing my job to the best of my ability and smile and say good morning to people from janitor up to the Admins Execs. Anyone insisting on dragging me into politics gets to meet my alter ego that few have seen and lived to talk about it. LOL

BS to MSN for RN
I'd highly recommend getting your BSN it's only 1 year and in the long run it is not that much of a time, it does teach vaulable skills, then go for your MSN and pick up some RN nursing experience while you're in school all theory and no practice is no good. Good luck! keep us updated

Any Dual ANP or FNP/WHNP Programs
you may have to pick an NP Program with your highest interest first then after do a Advanced Certificate Program on top of it which will then qualify you to practice as both.

New Graduate Nurse NYC
I feel your pain and would encourage you to keep doing work you're doing: apply everywhere anywhere nursing home, covid vaccine clinics they're always hiring, hospitals, even consider relocatting to upstate NYS for 1 year just to get that golden 1 year of experience. what you don't' want to happen is be unemployed for 1 year with no RN exp then you become a stale grad and then become unhirable because recruiters believe your nursing skills have become rusty and new grad programs only accept well new grads which is defined as graduated under 1 year. FYI 10 yrs ago it took me 450+ unique applications and something like 5-6 months of nonstop daily applications to get 2 job offers and 1 job acceptance. I had no connections no contacts, nada it was alot of hard work, persistence and it paid off. Now? I can get into any hospital I want should I want to change jobs. I've got the skills, experience, certifications and degrees. You can do this! keep trying and keep an excel or some form of traCKING sheet going so you know who you spoke to when and whenre and when to follow up and what you talked about. trust me it helps when you're applying to hundreds of jobs.

NP Programs in New York City or New Jersey
anywhere that's accredited will do no one has ever asked me where I got my BSN, Associates etc only am I an RN? what certifications do I have, do I know how to do XYZ. There's no need to spend big money on an Ivy league degree vs. a state or city funded school because you'll be paid the same salary the company won't pay you more for your name brand degree. I know because I have both. Get some RN experience while you're at it an NP without ever having worked as an RN is practically useless as all you have is theory and no application and experience skills. I'm getting my MSN in nursing informatics from CUNY SPS but I'm a NYC resident so and its online so its convenient for me and works with my work hours. If I were to go to NJ I'd be paying out of state tuition. Good luck and best wishes keep us updated!

CUNY School of Professional Studies MSN (FALL 2020)
Hi just an update! I am now in year 2022 Spring as I'm at at CUNY SPS: MSN Nursing informatics major! I did have to take some time off due to personal reasons. They were quite understanding and accomodating my advisors and nursing director helped me through the process of getting emergency leave from school and then coming back. Time management is key, classes are asynchronous meaning you log on whenever you want h.w, discussion boards, assisgnments, online tests, is due at set dates and time and how you do it up to you just get it in on time. There's alot of reading, studying, self research, I love the program as it is very flexible I work M-F 8-4:30pm and this allows me to complete my degree as any brick and mortar program would be impossible as it has same school hours as my job.

ADHD Nurses-what area do you specialize in?
Shrug, there's a fit for everyone just gotta find you're groove. I'm not gonna disclose my diagnosis here but suffice it to say I have intermittent FMLA in place so when I am ill, I can safely take time off to rest and recover. My motto is the nurse should never be sicker than the patients she's caring for. And it's not a good sign when your patient asks, "Nurse are YOU OK?" so I call out when I feel that I am too sick to work or will provide unsafe patient care or if I'm unable to make that decision my doctor makes it for me he'll tell me I need to call out for the week and he'll write me a note. At my school, I am enrolled in my office of disabilities for reasonable accommodations like extra time for assignments. When I get a flareup, I need recovery time. SPECIALTY: Ambulatory care primary care clinic SCHOOL: MSN: nursing informatics 2nd class

Experience required or preferred
apply and keep applying AND take a per diem job somewhere and build some skills and networking connections make friends as those nurses typically work somewhere else too and that might be your way in. My very first nursing job took 450+ unique applications that I needed and excel sheet tracking it and I had zero experience yet I was able to get 2 job offers so keep trying never give up. and no it don't take a week to prepare to apply takes me 30-60 mins to write resume from scratch set up profile and bam you're ready to click and apply. Good luck and every day you should be applying to a few places it adds up.

Upcoming New Grad trying to move back to NY
so get your BSN and while you're at it go get some RN Peds experience. When they say "Preferred" it mind as well mean required because the competition is so stiff. Lotsa BSN prepared nurses here but apply and also start applying and start your BSN program so you can prove that you are in the process of getting your BSN. good luck

Orientee too slow on EMR..now what?
Orientee gets flustered when I speed up so have to go at her pace otherwise she’d freeze and can’t remember how to find info she could find before. She’s a bit older. I’m trying to get her to be comfortable w EPIC know where to find what info. I guess just reinforce practice and slowly up the speed
