PRI Assessments

U.S.A. New York

Published

I haven't posted on AllNurses for a very long time but I did not know where else to turn to ask for New York State-specific information. (The PRI is only used in NY).

I would love to hear from case managers, nursing home nurses, home care nurses and anyone else who would like to talk to me realistically about the PRI. In particular, I am interested in the following:

1. Since it is so out-of-date is it still useful to you?

2. Do you have trouble finding certified PRI nurses to do the assessment for you?

3. How do you find someone to do the assessment for you?

4. Do you use paper or do you have the assessment in a computer?

Thank you to anyone who has anything at all to say about this topic.

Hi, I received H/C PRI training and got my five digit certification number (it never expires, btw). I don't have any experience in either fields you posted so maybe I may not be a good person to answer. But I can share that my training was informative and we were told NY is the only state that utilizes this instrument for their weird, personal reasons. It's very easy to use. And it's also done online, from what I was told but we learned the paper version.

CP1983, Thank you for your response. I, too, am certified and I found the course very interesting. I was wondering, in particular, about the usefulness of the instrument and how those who need one done find staff who are certified.

Good question. Maybe they can verify with the Department of Health since they are the ones that provide/issue the certification number. In terms of usefulness, I think NY have certain regulations that either they have to meet/follow so maybe the PRI provides an objective assessment of the client who needs to be placed in a nursing home and such. I do agree that since other states don't require it, it does appear that NY may be picky about certain things in general.

Where did you obtain the pri certification? Was it costly? Was it difficult ? Was it worth it?

Hey! So I actually obtained the PRI certificate with University of Albany. Things have changed because you can complete an online, self-pace training. Back then when I did it, it was an in-person class that I had to attend. I believe that it was 2017 when I got it. But Google "PRI  certificate University of Albany". I don't think it was that costly, I think I paid 200 but I don't remember. I believe it was worth it since it's needed for case/care management roles along with the SCREEN (which I didn't get but it would be good to get. But I think SCREEN component is more completed by SW though). It's not a difficult class but you have to complete the modules and the quizzes associated with it. I think it looks easier to do because it's self-pace/online.

Also to the OP,

I actually use the PRi where I work LOL. It's somewhat often but  it entirely depends on if the pt is going to or back to a nursing home. Many NHs request it frequently. We wonder how long it's good for because we have done for the same cases numerous times which can be redundant. I don't know if it evens good for a week because many NH wouldn't even take a pt in if it has been done over a week ago. But I do use it in my job as it's mandatory.
