Hi everyone,
I was wondering what is the best prep solution for either putting in a foley or for a lady partsl prep, when your patient is allergic to betadine. Thank you for your help.

Our hospital is stuck in the dark ages for the most part, we mostly use alcohol. lots of it if a patient is allergic to iodine/ betadine. Hope this helps.
What is the agent in technicare? What company is it from? I was surprised to read that most prep solutions in our hospital say for external use only. Some very specifically state, not for mucus membranes. My peers use phisohex when patients are allergic to iodine. The bottle says for external use only and that is why I do not feel comfortable using it for vag preps or for foley preps. Thank you for your help.

An ideal prep solution for those patients allergic to betadine is technicare. It is nonirritatiing to mucous membranes and has a high kill rate in a short time. We have found it to be an excellent alternative.
You are right not to feel good about using Phisohex on mucous membranes. Just because others use it does not make it the right choice. Phisohex contains hexachlorophine which is a toxic substance. It is slow acting and limited antibacterial action.
Techni-Care is manufactured by Care-Tech Laboratories, Inc. The active ingredients are Chloroxylenol 3%, Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate 3%. Most of the rest of the ingredients are similar to those you would find on a shampoo bottle. It is also for external use only but is labled as safe for use on mucous membranes and non-toxic.
