Premature Baby of AH1N1 Mother Dies Due to Medical Error

Published

I am a new nurse, and when I read about this case I became angry and frightened of the magnitude and sadness of a medical error for it affected so many lives! This tragic event happened this week at the Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, Spain. A baby was born to a 20 year old woman from Morocco which is northern Africa. There is a stretch of land in northern Africa which connects with southern Spain, that is how this northern African woman could travel from northern Morocco to Spain, so easily. The woman was from Ceuta, which is under the sovereignty of Spain in Morocco. The woman was 28 weeks pregnant, and got infected with the AH1N1 flu. She went to a hospital in Spain and was given medications and sent home. However, her health did not improve, so she went to a second hospital in Madrid, Gregorio Marañón Hospital, and in that hospital Dalilah Mirnouni was diagnosed with the AH1N1 flu, and was admitted. As Dalilah's health took a turn for the worst, the doctors decided to do a cesarian for saving her baby, and two days after delivering by cesarean operation a healthy baby, Dalilah died. The baby whose name was Rayan was not infected with the AH1N1 flu. A new nurse, 22 year old was assigned to the NICU, and her first patient on her first day on the job was baby Rayan, the premature baby born to the AH1N1 infected Moroccan woman. The nurse supervisor assigned the new nurse to feed baby Rayan. However, the new nurse feed baby Rayan by intravenous injection instead of a nasogastric tube feeding!!!! The report said that the doctors were all night trying to clean the premature baby's blood unsuccessfully for baby Rayan died in the morning. I am putting the link of this case below...you will see the hospital director and other hospital officials delivering the news to the press. My heart is broken for the father of the baby who lost a wife and his baby within a week apart. The family of the Moroccan woman is suiting two hospitals for this sad event. The new nurse and her supervisor were suspended. I have more information than what the link I put down says for I am fluent in Spanish and was able to get information from Spain. The media in Spain is furiously reporting a lot of details surrounding the medical error, many people expressing outrage over this event. This serious medical error did not have a good outcome as far as the career of the new nurse and her supervisor. Even the king of Morocco had something to say about this horrible medical error. The king of Morocco paid for all funeral arrangements, and sent a jet to collect baby Rayan's body for burial next to his mother who died a week ago. This is big news in that area of the world for this unfortunate event is compelling the social medicine ministry in Spain to come up with a better plan to deal with its increasing cases of AH1N1 flu in Spain. feliz3
