Pre-Student Pre-Chem?

Published

I have been out of school for almost 27 years. "Planning" on taking prereqs next spring, but until then I was wondering if there are any good materials that could help me with the chemistry? I've read I should know at the least algebra as that and chem kinda go hand and hand.

Some people say it's not that tough but I would like to have a strong understanding of the basics before stumbling when it really counts.

Any opinions on some good books that could help me grasp the essentials first and not dump the whole plate into my lap? Kind of like pre-algebra before algebra.

Honestly, the best thing to do is just wait. Your first chem class will be a basic chem that begins at the very essentials of chemistry and build from there. Same for your other classes. You will need a general bio or intro health bio, and those will both start at the very basic beginning levels of bio. Then from there you will take A&P 1 and 2 which will be an advancement on your entry bio with focus on the human body.

I dont really see how chemistry is similar to algebra. Unless the person who told you that is referring to the "letters" in chemical equations. There really isnt much algenra to Chem. I would relate it more to middle school math, but with elements in place of numbers. You'll see what I mean when you start.

Since you will also be required to take college level math, and you are worried about Chem, take Math the first semester. Probably best to take math, gen bio, and english. If you want a full schedule then intro psych would be a good one to start with as well. All four of those classes are the "easier" classes and will be good for getting your feet wet before jumping right in to the harder sciences.

Lastly, you should see a advisor. They can lay out a plan for you academically so you know what classes you will need to take, which classes are pre reqs for your other classes, and what the requirements for applying to NS are. Good luck
