Best work experience for pre-nursing? PCA/Tech?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm spending this fall finishing up my Master's degree (in non-nursing) and prereqs for second-degree/accelerated BSN programs and would like to work for some extra money and experience while doing this. At my local hospital they offer both Support Tech and Patient Care Assistant positions part-time. Support techs help with patient mobility and act as a clerk on the unit, and PCAs seem to basically be CNAs at the hospital. I'm torn between which to go for. The Support Tech will still get me used to the software, unit culture and some patient interaction, but the PCA seems more directly related to nursing. The only downside is that I would need my CNA for the PCA position, and I don't know if going for that would be worth my time or money right now since I've got a lot on my plate and I hope to start nursing school next summer. If I don't get into the nursing programs I know being a CNA/PCA could be a good "Plan B" but I could always go for the CNA after this spring when my schedule lightens up a bit if I would like. Any advice on pros/cons of each position will be appreciated!

Thank you!
