Pre-med BSN at FSU

Nurses Men

Published

Hi y'all, I'm currently enrolled at my local community college and after this semester I will have all of my requirements for my AA except for my electives. I KNOW that I eventually want to become a doctor so my plan is to take as many pre reqs as I can towards counting as my electives.

I have shadowed med students and doctors and I got a scholarship to attend the FSU COM summer institute program for high school students interested in becoming an MD. During this week long program, I lived in the dorms and were mentored by the med students and got to see surgeries and I even got to hold a human heart in their anatomy lab. I know what it takes to get into med school and I currently have a 4.0 GPA but two things are holding me back from getting a Bio degree. First, If something happens and I cant pass organic chem or something, I don't want to end up with a useless science degree. I can't imagine not working in healthcare. This is why I was considering earning a BSN at FSU. that way I'm guaranteed a healthcare job. Also If I cant get into med school my second option would be to become a NP. I could also still apply to PA school if I wanted. there are just so many open doors to healthcare professions with a BSN.

Second, if and when I make it to medical school I'm going to have to work in the summers to help pay for living expenses, and I think that working as a nurse will not only be better pay than a min wage job but It would also give me direct application to what I'll be learning.

So my main questions are

1. Is getting a Pre-med BSN (fulfillinf pre reqs along the way) a good ideaq? do med schools accept BSN nurses straight out of school? would carribean or D.O. schools be easier for nurses to get into?

2. Is it a good idea to work as an RN during summers in med school? about how much could I make in a summer in the Tallahassee area? I can only afford enough loans to take out tuition for med school.

3. Do most male nurses become NP's (just wondering) and how competitive is FNP school compared to med school?

Thanks,

A
