Hi there,
I have just accepted my offer to the PN program at George Brown College for the Fall of 2015. I was wondering if anyone who has been in the program or is currently enrolled in the program can answer some of my questions!
How work intensive is the program?
Are the practicum placements useful?
Does the program foster a group-based learning /individual or a combined approach?
What do you know about Job availability after the completion of the program? Do most people land a job soon after graduation or is it highly competitive?
Thank you so much in advance, as you can probably tell I am very anxious about my decision and any help on the above questions will help me a bunch!
Thanks,
Ethan

Congratulations!
I think the answers to your questions are a bit subjective but generally I'd say the program is pretty work intensive. It's not rocket science but it's high volume. Semester 1 was pretty manageable for me but I'm used to post-secondary school. I believe the transition is more difficult coming out of high school as you're not necessarily an independent learner yet.
The placements are certainly useful but you may have to work harder in some scenarios to make the most of the experience. Not all nurses you shadow will have your education in mind and not all instructors should be instructors. But you can still absorb information and learn from those around you.
It's a combined approach. There is some group work in courses like English or the electives but you're learning with your peers in courses like clinical lab. It's an asset to use each other for study groups and support one another. By teaching you're strengthening your skills.
I'm only wrapping up semester 1 so I can't speak for the last question but there are lots of opportunities for nurses. I think it depends on how widely you cast your net and how well you network within the program. Stay well rounded and don't lose yourself in school.
