PPCC Wait List

Published

I'm going to attend the next info session at PPCC for their nursing program but until then . . . does anyone know the approximate wait time once you get on the wait list? Does anyone know how that works? Are you able to register on the wait list and then complete your prereqs in the meantime? Thanks!

Hi there, I attend PPCC, and am starting the second semester of the nursing program tomorrow.

I was able to get into the program quicker because I am a military spouse, but most of my classmates had to spend 2 years on the wait list before getting in. All your pre-reqs must be finished before you can get on the wait list. But things could have changed (they are ALWAYS changing) since I was doing my pre-reqs, so be sure to go to their info session and talk to someone in the Nursing department.

Don't get discouraged. Last I heard, they are going to start 2 programs a year, one in the spring and one in the fall, instead of only starting 1 program a year, each fall. This should help with that long wait. Hopefully this is still in their nursing program plans.

Good luck!

hello,

I too am starting at PPCC although I have to finish up the pre reqs and then apply. I missed the info night last time because of the snow. I think the next one is the 21st. Maybe I will see you there.

To the poster who said you got in quicker because of military spouse status, how much quicker? I too am a AF spouse. (used to be Pete, now Schriever) I know the current list is 2 years, how long did you wait after applying?

Also is PPCC one of those schools that if you fail a class you are out with no chance of retaking the class? Or is there a math test that you have to get 100% on? These are things that I have read on this site about other schools and I am curious. Thanks!!

I got on the military spouse list when I finished my pre-reqs in Spring 07, and was able to start the program in Fall 07. They hold 10 slots for spouses. You have to write a letter of intent and provide copies of your spouse's orders and ID card. Definitely talk to someone in the department about this though, because it could have changed. And do it before you finish those pre-reqs, because as more spouses find out about the list, the higher the competition is for those spots as well. I'm just extremely grateful PPCC would do something like this for us military spouses.

If you fail a class, you get one more try to pass. If you fail it again, you're out of the program. Passing is 77%, no rounding. And you do have to take a math calculations test, but you must pass it by 93%. It's not as bad as it sounds. You take it on your own time in the testing center, you have 3 tries to pass, and if you fail the first time, you meet with your teacher so they can help you figure out what went wrong and how you can pass the second time.

If you're interested in all the detailed policies of the program, the bookstore sells the nursing handbook for $6. But I don't mind answering any questions either.

Thanks so much!

These were questions I had been thinking about for some time. I won't be able to apply for a while yet. Need to get through Micro and A and P. Do I need a 4.0 like I have seen on these boards? What math do you need is Math 090 good enough or do I need something higher?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

I need to correct my previous post! I actually finished my pre-reqs Fall 06, not Spring 07, oops! I took some other classes required for the nursing program during Spring 07 while I waited. These were Math for Clinical Calculations, Nutrition, and Pathophysiology. You can take them early or while you're in the program. I'm so glad I got them over with.

You only need Math 090 to get into Clinical Calc. And you do not need a 4.0, just a 2.5 on your pre-reqs.

Good luck on A&P and Micro! I loved those classes. Try and get Threllfall for your A&P's. He's a toughie (they all are) but his lectures and notes are EXCELLENT.

Thanks!

Glad to talk to you, I have just learned a bunch of stuff from you. I had no idea I could take those classes early. That would be great to save time for the actual nursing classes. How hard are those classes? Are they interesting?

I'm not the strongest in math, so I am worried about that math class, but if math 090 is all I need to do well then I guess I won't worry too much about that. I tend to syke myself out with math, but I am looking forward to the sciences.

Thanks so much!

Thanks for you help! I am going to be attending the meeting on the 21st. It's too bad you can't apply to the wait list and then complete prereqs . . . it wouldn't seem like waiting then. Although I am very impatient and just want to get going now. :)

I'm glad I could help you both! It's nice to see some people posting from Colorado Springs.

As for the classes -- Patho was interesting, but very hard. Try your best to get this one out of the way before you start the program. The math was easy for me, but I enjoy algebra, and the calculations use basic algebra. There are two Nutrition class options; a 1 credit and a 3 credit. I took the 1 credit and it was the easiest class I've ever taken. I heard there was a lot of time consuming busywork in the 3 credit class, but that's the one you need if you want your Nutrition to transfer to a 4 year university. (Which I found out after I took the 1 credit, guh.)

I think it's unfair to students that you have to have ALL your pre-reqs done before you can get on the waiting list. When I was working on mine, the waiting list requirement was to be finished with A&P 1. They changed it about a year ago. I know they are trying to keep the list neat and orderly, but this new policy is really screwing the people who are serious about getting a nursing degree. Just drop those people from the list who don't maintain their GPA and move everyone up, right?!

Anyway, have fun at the meeting next week!
