pinay who died in canada won't get financial help from owwa
an overseas filipino worker (ofw) who died after a tree fell on her in canada will not receive financial assistance from the overseas workers' welfare administration (owwa).qtv's balitanghali reported on thursday that the relatives of olivia banito will not receive monetary help as the filipina was not able to avail of owwa's membership.
i don't know if this is a scare tactic, but i think this is just plain wrong.
even if this ofw was not an owwa member, she was still a philippine citizen, entitled to protection and services from the philippine government.
that's what taxes are for.
morale of the story?
1. don't die outside the philippines
2. stay away from trees.

kababayans (countrymen),
i'm sharing this so those coming back from a vacation in the pearl of the orient seas won't get a rude shock.
click on the link to go to the webpage on where you can get this "proof that the worker had undergone the legal and right procedure of overseas employment."
as usual, people are left wondering what the "full protection and benefits from government institutions" are available to the ofws.
finally, a warning:
guidelines on the processing of exit clearance of vacationing workers
safest bet would be not to set foot on philippine soil until after you get your green card.
