Hi Everyone,
I'm a pre-nursing student and was just diagnosed with ADD. I'm now taking my medication and it's helping, but I'm feeling a little insecure. Are there any other nurses or nursing students out there with ADD? I'm currently holding a 4.0 and plan to keep it that way, but I've heard that even pre-nursing students who had a very high GPA end up struggling durning nursing school. Just need some reassurance that I can do this, despite the factors working against me. Thanks for your time in reading this.:icon_roll

There's a lot of talk about ADD on the nurses with disabilities forum. There are 2 links above, but you may find more that will help give you some confidence.
Good luck to you.

I think you will be okay. There are several students with ADD that are in the program. Go & see the lady in the LRC building (I think it's by where the Help for women -or something like that- door is). She will tell you what you need. I think if you get a doctor's note stating that you have ADD you will be able to take your exams in a private room with a little more time. That will definitely help! GL!

I was diagnosed with mild ADD and OCD. I do find myself "stuck" on things sometimes because my mind either can not process it from the ADD or get "stuck" where I can't get over it because of the OCD. I am not on medication because like I said it is mild, my Dr says that it works well for me because it helps my cope with things better and stay on task.
I am not in the nursing program yet just doing my pre-reqs, but I go to Baker and there are a lot of classes you have to take to get into the program and it is very stressful. If you ever feel overwhelmed just stop and take a deep breath, and never think twice about going to the Dr to have your medications adjusted if needed. Good luck to you!!
Thanks everyone for your responses, they have helped me. I will keep trying my best and I will get that dr.s note! That will help a lot! Thanks again for your support!

You will be fine. I have a classmate with adult ADD and he is medicated for it. He's doing very well and keeping up with the rest of the class. And, I was a 4.0 student until nursing school. I haven't gone down by much and it's not that it is so much harder. It's just time consuming and there is so much more information to cover than in the pre-reqs. :)

Are you kidding me? I think that because you have ADD, you will be magnificant. When my daughter was diagnosed with ADD, I did alot of research. Turns out that the only one's with a disability are the one's without it. I congratulated her on her brilliance and expressed to her that it would be tough for a time, but that there would come a day when she would be able to accomplish things that most others could never dare to dream of.
So I say to you, it may be tough for a time but you will be able to accomplish things that most others could never dare dream of.
One of my instructors has type 1 diabetes and ADHD. He has six degrees and it the most fabulous person I will probably ever meet in my lifetime. He has his own practice in psych, he does alot of teaching all over the place, and he is one of the happiest people I have ever met in my life. His sheer brilliance shines.
Hang in there. You'll get your grove, and you will do remarkable things.
