PICU Nurse Job Satisfaction

I am planning to return to my old job in the PICU. I truly feel like that is where my heart lies. By making this transition I am giving up alot of flexibility and money for what I believe is job satisfaction. My husband says I was miserable when I was in the PICU previously (I can't really remember it being that bad) but I realize some of the things I disliked are things that are common everywhere. I remember there being tough days but I always felt supported by our Docs and nurses. I do have a young family (2 children under 4) and I am afraid that they may suffer. Well, I said all that to say.... How do PICU nurses feel about there jobs? Overall, are you happy, what are your dislikes?

I work in the PICU and would rate my job satisfaction as mediocre. There are great days and horrible days. But I feel that alot of my job disatisfaction roots from lack of support and unity from our team of nurses and doctors. Working with children is generally very enjoyable for me, although there are many sad cases. I do not have any children, but I often wonder how my emotions and feelings might be different if I did. Try to think back to what made you unhappy when you worked there previously and how much those things matter to you now. I will admit that after going on a couple week vacation, I really started to miss work which I never thought I'd say.

Well, after unofficially accepting my old position in the Picu, my hubby and I decided the decrease in pay ($10 less/hr),20 mi. commute increase, 8 more hours /week, and over nights (currently 2pm-mn shift) that it wasn't worth it. I do miss the picu and the opportunites it offers but my family is more important. I can do me when they are a little older.
