Picu Gn

I have just graduated, May 2006. I am preparing for NCLEX and have recently accepted a position as a PICU nurse. I have a lot of experience with PCU, CCU, and adults. Even though I am extremely excited about starting my new position, I am nervous about how much I may not know about children at this level of care. I know with 12 weeks of training I will catch on fast, especially since I am extremely motivated to do well, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a smooth transition/increased preparedness. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I think the best nurses are the one's that are a little nervous. The ones that come off overly confident are the one's I am concerned about. Just remember to ask questions. No question is a dumb question. You will do great. By the end of orientation you should be feeling more confident. If not your facility can always give you a little more time. Find a person that you feel 100% confident in confiding with about questions and that can be a resource to you. I was a new grad in the PICU and made it. It was hard, but even when I was on my own I had one particular nurse that was extremely knowledgable that I felt very comfortable asking for help/suggestions. Good luck!
