Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing - Hard to get into??

Published

Hi All,

Im considering trying to get into a private school first because my GPA isnt so high. I recently moved into the NJ area, but work in NYC (right next to PhillipsBethIsrael). First of all, they are extremely hard to get in contact with!! I've tried for over 2 weeks now and NO ONE is answering the phone. I've left over 5 messages in different departments and they're not returning my calls.

Anyways... I really wanted to speak with a counselor over there but in the meantime Ill get info from you! :D BTW I looove this website, it has guided me through the start of my new life.

Is it hard to get this school? Im really nervous because I messed up my first year in college but I really want (and deserve) a second chance. Can anyone tell me how many people are accepted into the program each year versus how many people applied? Is the GPA just calculated on the pre-reqs such as A&P Iⅈ Micro; Chem etc.. OR is teh GPA calculated over you entire college career?

PLEASE HELP! :) Thanks everyone in advance!

Hi notsurenursing,

There is another thread in the ny programs discussion section labeled phillips beth israel applicants 2010 that I started. Welcome to the forum! This has also been a really great resource for me when researching the application process for phillips. There is another thread from last year called beth israel nursing school I think started by shanaj. So if u research on this site there r a few threads that have LOTS of info.

If you go to an open house it is very very informative and gives all the information and answers all questions u have. When I went in nov the assistant dean said they generally have 900-1000 applicants to fill abuout 150 spots for all the programs. The general break down is 100 to the full time and 25 or so to the 2 part time programs. In terms of gpa they've said they take the entire application into consideration. I think if u demonstrate that u r committed and show success in the more recent yrs it looks better.

Did u already send an application and take the NLN?

Thank you Starlette926! I have been reading up on the different threads and I have to say Im pretty nervous. I havent started my pre-req's yet (will start this summer) and I just received the NLN pre-entrance exam study guide. I will be studying my butt off this year because I am not the best test taker :uhoh3:

Did you get into the nursing program? If so, do you know the average GPA that was accepted into the program?

i havent gotten in yet! lol but i just had my interview yesterday which went REALLY well...my interviewer said there is no reason i shouldn't get accepted. I'll hear by next tues informally. Alot of my classes transferred so if i do get accepted i will really only be taking the nursing courses, a pharmacology course and that 3 wk long pathways to practice course at the end of the 2nd yr. As for my gpa it was just under 3.0 for college - i already have a BA in psych. I took the prereqs from summer 08 until last fall 09 and got all A's. I didn't do very well for my BA, i definitely could have gotten a higher GPA. I scored 140 composite 96 percentile on the NLN. I would say they definitely look at the entire package not just grades or NLN scores or whatnot. Obviously if you do well on NLN and classes you will be a much stronger candidate and have more of a chance of getting in - as with any school. Obviously if you excel academically (which she stated that it's apparent i have...) you are a stronger candidate.

Which program were you planning on applying to?

Good luck with the prereqs!!!

oh i didn't answer your question of the average GPA...i'm not really sure but i think you have to have a min of 2.5??? don't quote me but i think that is what i read in the catalog

My GPA for my BA was lower than a 3.0 as well. Thats why I never even considered the nursing program until I found out they only calculate your pre-req GPA. I have a long while to go before I even apply to any programs because I have all my pre-reqs to do and since Im working a full-time job I really only want to take 1 or maybe 2 courses at a time. AND I have to get all A's like you if I have a chance!! :) Congrats by the way on that! Getting all A's is a big accomplishment!

Im thinking I will try to get into their full time program and get a part time job to keep some money coming in. I live with my boyfriend and he is so supportive for me to get into Nursing that he is willing to support most of the bills while a go to school. :redbeathe

I am really happy for you about your interview!! Im sure you will get in. Thank you for all your help and support! Allnurses.com rocks!! :D

No problem! Again, good luck with everything! If you do well on the NLN (score in the 90s for percentile AD) You should rest assure that you will be strong candidate. As for trying to do the full time program, it might be tough to do but if you get all those general ed and prereq courses out of the way it probably would be best! Then you'll only have to worry about nursing courses.=)

GOOD LUCK!!!
