Pharmacology help!

Published

Hi everyone! This is my first post so bear with me :) I am a junior nursing student and taking pharmacology this semester! I have my second test next week and its on psychotics, analgesics, drugs affecting the blood, etc. No cardiac drugs or anything (we haven't gotten that far yet). Does anyone have any good study guides (no books to purchase or anything) or any good sites/tips that can help? I've been going over my charts and drug cards but I am worried because there are SO many adverse drug reactions and patient teaching that we have to memorize. I am not a multiple choice test taker...and unfortunately that is what all nursing tests are like! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am taking Pharmacology right now and it is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. I honestly feel Patho is easier. I did okay on the first test, but the second one I did the worst I've ever done on a test. The problem for us is our instructor's slideshow packets are so full of material. Every page has 6 slides with the tiniest font ever and then we have to study packets that have 30 or more pages in addition to other packets as well. It really sucks. I would love some advice for this class as well. Our instructor asks the most random questions so it's hard to study everything, it's actually impossible to study everything because it is just too much material. I am really nervous about our next test which is on cardiac drugs. We need to get a 78 or higher to pass the class (C or above). I am really, really worried about this class. The drug names are so technical and foreign sounding, I can barely pronounce most of them let alone learn all these technical details. I feel for ya hun, I'm right there with you. :(

I know right?! I did good on my first test but I've been taking some practice ones on the textbook website and I don't feel confident at all. Its one thing when you are studying them on a page but when you take that page away and try to answer a question, I am totally at a loss. What has been difficult for me is that other students in my class study less than I do but end up getting a higher score than me, which is hard to swallow. Everyone tells me to not compare myself to others but its just so hard when you're in a competitive program. We have slides to study from but the professors take their note pages off before they put them up on the website. I feel like its impossible to know everything about every drug!

The nursing students in my school are unbelievably competitive. In fact, some of the girls actually get mad if you do better than them, it's insane. (I understand getting mad in some instances but getting mad at someone for getting an A when they deserved it isn't right, ESP. if they studied more, etc and this is what a lot of the girls do at my school because they are all about getting one up on the other). But yes, we all will compare ourselves to our peers because it's impossible not to. I feel it's okay to question or get upset if in fact you study MORE and put more time into it than girls who go hang out with friends or go on vacation and barely put any time into school....because how can you not wonder why or how that is possible after putting that much work into it? One of the girls in my classes barely studies. She will start studying at 9pm the night before the test and yet she received a B on the last exam. I really don't understand it. I don't know if it's because she has nurses in her family and they help her or if she is just good at that subject but I have felt very discouraged about this class and knowing that I study more and get a lesser result doesn't help. I feel I study hard, I learn the material as best as I can, and it's just not enough for this class. For my clinical class, I have received higher grades so I know it's not my studying method....I really feel it must be the material. But good luck to you, I wish I could be of more help. I did look online and I plan to go buy a book other than my textbook and the name of it is - Prentice Hall Reviews & Rationales: Pharmacology (2nd Edition). It has received really good reviews & you can find it at Borders or on Amazon.com. I plan to go buy it tomorrow and hopefully it helps, I will let you know! :)
