HI! I am a critical care nurse who is very interested in perinatal nursing and I have been working as a nurse in a CCU for 15 months.....still fairly new. I submitted an application to work in a nursery in hopes that I would eventually start a perinatal specialty training course in October at the same hospital. The nurse manager from the unit called me yesterday and I informed her that I have no experience but I am so interested in this specialty. We set up an interview for next Wednesday for her the nursery unit......what can I expect from the interview questions? I am a little nervous and want to do my best.

Emphasize your interest in assisting your patients and families in their transition to parenthood. Discuss your desire to positively impact a family during the most monumental experience of their lives. Talk about how you will promote bonding, breastfeeding, family education, health awareness and disease and accident prevention (infant care and safety).

Emphasize how your background has prepared you to establish trusting relationships with patients and their families. Discuss your excellent assessment skills and attention to fine detail that enable you to pick up on potential problems at their earlies stages, and intervene to prevent serious complications.

Remember that most moms and babies are healthy, and are primarily in need of teaching and support. But, when complications occur in OB, they can have implications for 2 patients, not one. That is why keen assessment and interventional skills are so important.

Your background in critical care will serve you well. Good luck!
