People who went into LaGuardia/CUNY for nursing school as transfer

I am planning on applying to a CUNY CC for nursing, but i did really poor in my past college. (1.2 gpa) :crying2: I know to get into the nursing programs you need to take a pre requisite semester. My question is..is there a gpa requirement to even take the pre-requisite classes? and lets say they do accept me into the school to take it, will they look at the GPA from the prereq classes only or my total gpa including the 1.2 averaged in?

How long have you been out of school? I had some less than stellar grades from my first attempt at college right out of hs! There is no GPA required to get into a CUNY CC - you take a placement test like everyone else.

Once you are admitted to the college you choose to sign up for the pre-req classes. Remember, many people are trying to do the same, so you have to be READY on the first possible day of registration, at the first possible minute registration opens, to register for a seat in those pre-req classes because they disappear FAST!

I am now in CUNY Nsg Program at QCC. The thing to do is - no matter which school you choose - do GREAT on your pre-reqs. And when I say GREAT, I mean GREAT. Like get A's & B's (preferably A's!).

The four pre-req classes they look at at QCC are Psych, Sociology, A&P I, and English Comp I.

And that is the GPA they will most consider - but instead of stressing about whether they average in your old gpa just ask the Nsg Department at the school you are looking at! And if they say yes, it doesn't matter! You cannot change it right? You can only do your best now and show the world you have changed.

The past is gone - go forward with determination and a positive attitude.

Prepare yourself to do well - start studying A&P now. There is a great book "Get Ready for A&P" you can get it on Amazon. Get the Cliff Notes for A&P. I don't know if this link still works but you can watch an entire semester of Anatomy at Berkeley online : http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978375

Read up on Psychology and Sociology. If you need help with English grammar or writing or with math ask for it. I have to say, CUNY colleges are really set up to help you- all you have to do is ask, and then follow directions and be disciplined in your work.

Also, have a plan B. The limited number of seats in the CUNY CC Nsg programs means it is almost like playing the lottery. You do your best and get a high GPA but that does not guarantee a seat - because many people are doing the same thing. So look into other Nsg. programs in the area too - even if you start your pre-reqs at CUNY - you can transfer - just do really, really well from here on out - good grades will pave the way wherever you go.

good luck!

thanks for the well thought reply, i def saved the website link you gave me. I've only been out of school 1 year, im gonna call the school to find out for sure. Thanks for giving me some hope back! Only question i have is, do you know if Fs/ or W / WUs on the transcript also transfer over or do they only transfer classes you got credit on

Actually I don't attend QCC.. i'm actually with lagcc for the nursing program. I finished my BA and going back for the nursing field. I did transfer over a lot of my credits but I really don't need those b/c they do not correlate with the nursing field. However they just transferred the credit but not the grades. THe only grades they transfer over is the one that matters most to get into the nursing field. Like the prereq if you choose to keep those grades in the record then you can do so. THat's if you did well why not?! However if you didn't do well you can retake and start fresh. I mean that is it for now..

I'm currently taking Psy over again to get an A and taking Math 106 to get an A.. but my Eng I got an A- which transferred over from my old school.

I'm more worried with the A&P class i'm taking in Jan b/c its intensive but i'm going to go with the suggestion given with buying the book from Amazon.. how to prepare yourself.. thanks for the suggestion! *winks*

I just wanted to say that the person above me is incorrect. You CANNOT pick and choose which classes get transferred over, whatever is on your transcript is what the transfer college sees. Even if the class doesn't apply to nursing, it doesn't get erased from your records. Grades that are below a D aren't excepted by any CUNY colleges, so they aren't erased but they aren't acknowledged (transferred over) by the college. They still see that you have those grades of course when they get your transcript.

Ok, maybe you misinterpret what I was saying before. I didn't saying that you can choose and pick watever class you want to transfer over. I was referring to the prereq. All the other stuff I know you can't transfer all the credits over b/c for me they didn't take every single credit when I came back to school. However, what i am saying is the grades for the prereq. I was referring that if you get a bad grade like a D of course you can't transfer that over but if you get like a B or so you can choose to have it transferred if you want.. if not you let the counselor know. That is what I was told...They will NOT transfer that class over if you do not want that grade.
