Penn State Hershey's Medical Center GN Residency 2014

Published

Hey Everyone! I just had a couple of questions with Hersheys GN residency program. I have completed my portfolio and submitted it. However, I think I may not get picked because of two things. So, I just wanted some clarity from people who have gotten in/not gotten in over the year(s).

a. my gpa is a 2.8, they say that it is preferred to have at least a 3.0.

is this indeed a deal breaker? I am worried a little because I am off by .2 of what they want?

b. the program starts in February of 2013, and that is when I start my bachelors program. is it unheard of that this program actually hires associate degrees? i have heard mixed reviews on this.

I appreciate the feedback that anyone could possibly have concerning the Hershey GN prgroam:)

I do not think anyone can realistically answer your questions, as any information or advice given would be based off anecdotal evidence. I would like to think that each application is being evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but the sheer volume of applications they receive and time constraints may prevent that from happening. After browsing previous threads it seems that some students with an associate degree were granted interviews, but I am unsure if they received offers. However, this does not mean that someone else with an associate degree, specifically those that are not active on this site, did not receive an offer. More telling, is that their website states that a BSN is not required.

I know you already submitted your application, but I hope you explained your GPA somewhere in your application. Explaining any extenuating circumstances or catastrophic event(s) may negate or diminish any negative effects. I would recommend not stressing (I know easier said than done) and adopting a wait and see approach. Finally, their website does state a 3.0 is preferred not necessarily required. I know it’s a matter of semantics, but I’m just saying. Good Luck!

This is what I copied from their website:

Is there a minimum GPA for acceptance?

Because the Residency is an extension of the studying/learning experience, a GPA of 3.0 and higher is preferred.

Is a BSN required in order to be hired as a Graduate Nurse Resident?

No, but in order to be hired without a BSN, any staff nurse hopeful (both new graduate and experienced nurse) must be willing to enroll in a BSN program within a year of hire, and complete the degree within 6 years. PSHMC offers tuition assistance to help make it financially feasible.

I did not want to hijack your thread, so I created an official thread for the residency (link below). I hope you get more answers to your original questions.

Specializes in Pediatric ICU.

Can anyone who was accepted to the residency and is working at Penn speak to their experience there so far? Is the residency a good program? Do you like the hospitals/coworkers/etc? I'd like to apply and am curious about everyone's experience!
