Peds Hospitals?

Published

Hi Everyone! :)

I just graduated in Aug. (BSN-RN) from Vancouver, Canada. I am currently working in a pediatric unit here but I am interested in working as a peds nurse in California (maybe San Diego). Can you tell me about the hospitals in that area and what the working conditions are like? Are there a need for peds nurses in Cali?

Thanks for your help! :)

Tell me about children's hospitals in LA please. I have family there so I wouldn't mind working their either. How are the working conditions? What are the wages like?

Thanks! :)

OK the one that is an all childrens hospital and really stands out is Los Angeles Childrens Hospital. It is located on Sunset and surrounder by other medical fasilities such as Kaiser and Presbytaria hospital. Then there is the Mattel Childrens clinic at UCLA and other places such as Cedars Sinai and Kaiser that deal with pediatrics. The LACH is also next to Ronald McDonalds house where many of the families that have children ill in the hospital live in. This hospital has many specialists and critically ill children. The starting rates in Los Angeles for a nurse range from about $24 to $32 per hour. At LACH my guess is you would start out at about $27 if you are a beginner but i am not sure how much experience you have. Ok i think that just about covers it, anymore questions feel free to ask.

Thanks calinurse316! You've been really helpful! :)

I have a few more questions. Do you know what the working conditions of these hospitals are like? How are the nurses treated there? And what is the nurse-patient ratio?

Sorry for asking so many questions! :imbar

Hi, i have to say that at Children's the nursing conditions are some of the best, which generally happens when you are working with children. You don't have to deal with the heavy angry patients,...you get the point. The nurses are treated really well i mean the starting pay isnt too high but the working conditions and benefits make up for that. The ratio i believe depends on what department you work on, in PICU i think it is 2:1 while in regular its 3:1 or 4:1. In cedars the working conditions are a bit harsher because you dont get trained, well most of the time u don't, but the pay makes up for that. Ratio i think is about the same. At UCLA the conditions are good, but once again the pay is lower....about the same ratio. Alright, hope this helped.
