PDA OS Trade offs

Published

I've been searching the forum for some objective trade-off analysis between PDA's running PalmOS and WindowsCE. Most of what I've been able to dig up has been pro-con PDA's in general and don't have much insight regarding issues such as ease of use, convenience, expandability (as in requirements for) etc.

So, turning to the broader Internet, I also did some searches regarding product comparisons. I feel fairly comfortable regarding performance comparisons and the pro's and con's of the different OS's.

Right now, I'm leaning toward the PalmOS for a couple of reasons. First, since the OS is tuned specifically for the Palm platform, it doesn't have to accommodate any extra features that would enable it to run, say, a slimmed down notebook. There also is some advantage in that the user interface is more efficient (from what I read, a desktop-capable UI is somewhat clunky in a handheld device). Also, the sorts of reference materials that might be used don't appear to be especially demanding, so efficient/fast strikes me as more appealing than flexible/not-so-fast. Somewhat related to that, since the Kernel on the Palm is less demanding, there appears to be a non-trivial difference in battery life. Since I don't envision having the ability to plonk my PDA into a cradle while on duty, battery life seemed to be rather important.

What I seem to be missing in all of this is: Are there any "show stoppers" regarding features, capabilities, etc. that the PalmOS might present? For example, do the PDA-using nurses have a preferred "killer app" that just don't perform on a Palm? Is there any need for a higher quality graphical display that might disqualify a PalmOS? etc., etc....

So.. for those of you who tend toward the "techie" side of life, where there any technical advantages/disadvantages that proved a deciding factor when making your purchase decision?

Last but not least.. I know there are a bazillion options that are available on these things, to include wireless connectivity. Has anyone ever encountered a situation where wireless transmission capabilities STOPPED you from using your PDA (thinking of possible EMI issues for med devices, telemetry, etc.)? Are there any issues you are aware of regarding campus networks that a facility might use that would drive the use of an expansion option (or not)? How about issues regarding integrated phones?

Sorry for the long post. I've managed to "get by" in my current job with the basement-level Handspring model - only need it for the personal organizer functions. Since I'm expecting to have a little more use for features during clinicals, etc, I wanted to be a bit more informed than I am now. I'd hate to dump a few hundred bucks on something and then find out that it doesn't do some critical job-related function.

Thanks.
