I am a nursing student doing a patient teaching project on diabetes. What resources do you use to teach your newly diagnosed patients? Thank you!

Well, I dont know how does that work in the U.S but, here in Puerto Rico all you have to do is:

1. Definition of the disease or condition (If you are going to give a talk to the patient this must be short and in words the patient undestands)

2. Signs and symptoms

3. Treatment

4. Prevention

5. Complications

6. What causes the disease or condition

In my case I like to make a brosure so the patient can read it every time he/she wants. You should also ask a few question to the patient just to make sure he/she understands whats his/her condition about. (And the patient MUST understand what is the condition or disease is about) We call it an educational talk, I dont know if this is what are you looking for but I hope it helps.

go to www.texasdiabetescouncil.org. They have good info

Basically, the patient needs "survival skills" taught. Per www.diabetes.org that would be target goals, how to use meter, how to take meds, what meds do, when to call MD and how to treat low blood sugar.

If the patient has been diabetic for a while, I can cover those topics quickly then I get in to prevention and complications.
