patient specific standardized procedure...HELP!

Our class has an assignment to write a patient specific standardized procedure, in this case, for the management of insomnia. (I live in one of those states, California, where NPs need standardized procedures...sigh.) However, the instructors WON'T GIVE US AN EXAMPLE yet insist that we do this assignment. I have searched and googled my heart out, but can't find a thing.

Can anyone help me? Has anyone done this before or have an example so that I can figure out how to do this? Help?

Think of Standardized Procedure as written policies, protocols, and procedures pertaining to the NP's role in any particular setting. The assignment is actually quite specific because we NP's typically work in a wider breadth of conditions than just insomnia so I think the assignment makes the task easier to write. That said, what would you figure an NP working with patients with insomnia will possibly do? Be creative, think an NP working in Sleep Medicine maybe?

Start with a general policy statement such as "So and so Sleep Medicine Associates will employ Nurse Practitioners as part of the expert provider teams in addressing the needs of patients with a wide range of sleep disorders...."

Define the role of a Nurse Practitioner based on California's definition...

Define the specific role the NP's do and the settings they will be practicing in...

Define the extent of physician involvement, review of charts for instance, time it takes for new NP orientation...

Enumerate all the pharmacologic agents that the NP's will be furnishing (prescribing)...

Write the steps to every procedure NP's will perform (i.e., sleep study, EEG monitoring)...

The CA BRN website has a standardized procedure template that you could just follow. Make sure this is ok with your instructor though before utilizing it. It made my life (at the time) so much better. Good luck!

I know that your post is old, but I am stuck on this same assignment.......It's killing me! Did you ever find a sample that one could follow to get a good idea on how to approach this? If so I would be ever grateful as I somehow can't get past this one.
