passing clinicals

Published

what do the instructor expect and what can i do so i will pass clinical? Aim off to lpn school so 4 semesters. I did 4 clinicals at my other school but only complete basic care. I don't have much understanding yet of what i need to do to be successful in clinicals

At my previous school i passed when

i kept my mouth shut

did my work the best i could

was prepared,

able to be professional under any situation, b

eing able to handle various situations like managing hyper maniac patients or the rudeness of my fellow students

and getting along with my instructor and students

I thought my weakness are

i lost focus when i was getting bullied or mistreated

anxiety. yes i got to learn to slow down, think, plan, and be calm

keeping mouth shut. i challenge teachers and argue about stuff way too much.

being sure of what i am talking about. whether its my charting, assessments

mistakes i got to really zero in on silly med mistakes. i got in trouble for giving meds loxapine, serequel without my teacher checking em off.

difficult nursing instructors really got me unhinged. everything I did was a mistake. i exasperated it by arguing and defending myself.

not following my teachers stuff. i do a lot of extra stuff on my own that i have practiced in labs before.

what i think i need

being able to control my emotions even better.

managing other people much better to get the results i want

no mistakes. we don't do much in labs so its a one shot deal in clinicals. how can i cover my butt better?

need a lot more but i think the first step is to identify what the clinical teachers want and expect

from other posts i know they want

1. no mistakes

2. obedience

3 professional conduct and communication. need some help here for sure. arguing is not good

what other stuff does the clinical teacher want?

thanks for your help

You need to look neat and professional, study the policies for your school and for the facility, they should have given you those at your clinical orientation. Follow the policies, i.e. in my school we had to have a sloppy copy of notes for the instructor to check before we wrote them in the real chart, then the instructor had to co-sign when we wrote in the chart. Always have a black ink pen, some facilities say blue or black others stay black only so I just always bought black. DO NOT HIDE, yes obvious but if you hang around the back of the hall and act busy the instructor will know, always be present and running around, grab up anything you can do or see even if it means aid work. Also your instructor may at first randomly pick who gets to do the "fun" stuff, well it was fun then, Caths wound dsgs all that so there's another reason you want to be alert and looking for work always. Also be sure to give your patients the best care possible, you will probably only have one or two, so do your best, if you need practice with any basics ask the sim-lab instructor if you can stay late a day and practice with the dummies (haha) And I recommend asking the nursing staff at hospitals, or the aids in nursing homes for help over asking class mates, I went to school with some immature people who always where busy helping their friend with say a 70 yr old pt recovering from pneumonia who is almost independent, yeah so ask the nurses over class mates. and work on ALL your weaknesses because they are pretty important.

thx did most of the that the first time

my major problem I need to work on is being more professional with my instructor. I have argue and defended myself that doesn't work. I think I need to own up , apologize and get it done. but any help with professional communication will help

I passed clinical in med surg and tertiary psych with flying colors those tips are good tips
