Passed the HESI - only studied 3 days

Published

I just took the HESI yesterday and wanted to share my thoughts on it. I had to take the reading comprehension, vocabulary, math, biology, and anatomy & physiology portions.

So here's the breakdown of question numbers and time allotted:

Reading comp: 55 Q's (60 min)

Vocabulary: 55 Q's (60 min)

Math: 55 Q's (60 min)

Biology: 30 Q's (30 min)

A + P: 30 Q's (30 min)

Personally, I think the most time consuming portion was the math portion. Mainly because there are lots of fraction addition and subtraction questions, which require you to do some extra work (not just using the calculator - which by the way is on the screen, so you don't need to bring your own). So pace yourself well and wisely.

The reading comprehension portion could also be somewhat time consuming, especially if you are a slow reader or need to reread the passage a couple times.

I decided to take this last minute, so I only was able to study 3 days before the exam. I crammed those three days, using a nursing entrance exam prep book (idiot's guide) and sample questions I found online and quizlet.

I'd suggest that you do as many practice questions as possible. That's the best prep you can get. A lot of the questions are absurdly easy and some just require some common sense. Process of elimination is your friend. If you're unsure about what's the correct answer, and ou can eliminate the incorrect ones, then you got your right answer.

All-in-all, the exam wasn't so bad. I was really nervous beforehand, and I was just psyching myself out.

Here are my scores:

Reading comp: 100%

Vocabulary: 92%

Math: 98%

Bio: 96%

A + P: 84%

Cumulative: 94%

Please note that I have never had a history of being a good standardized test taker. So, it's not like I'm just naturally good at this stuff.

Anyway, if you guys prepping for the HESI have any questions for me. Feel free to ask, I'm more than happy to help.
