PACU nursing to OR nursing

Published

Hi! I have been a nurse for almost 20 years and in PACU over a decade.I am burnt out with patients in PACU and just accepted an OR job that is in a closer hospital (same company) verses a 30 minute commute to my current hospital. Anesthesiologists I currenting work with have said I won't grow in OR and techs do everything it would be a waste of my knowledge. I am feeling change is good and am eager to learn something new and stay in the surgical area, and use my critical thinking skills to anticipate the needs of the OR team. Any PACU or OR nurses that have made this change give me any words of wisdom or encouragement. Thanks!

I don't understand why people say there is no growth in the OR...you CAN grow and branch out into tons of roles.

RNFA - registered nurse first assistant, actually suturing and being involved with the surgery.

Getting CNOR certified which gives you more credibility.

CVOR joining the cardio team.

You can specialize in any specialty like neuro, ortho, cardio, ENT.

Clinical lead

Educator

OR manager

What I don't understand is why anesthesiologists who aren't nurses are telling you there isn't room to grow in the OR, especially when their life in the OR is about 5 minutes long. They come in put the patient to sleep and the rest falls on the CRNA.

I agree to everything that u said. OR nurses are just underrated
