Overcoming your fears

Published

]I have a very bad case of emetophobia (fear of throwing up) and I'm planning on going into Nursing hopefully in the fall. I don't want this fear to hold me back from accomplishing my dreams. Any advice?:uhoh3:

i dont have a fear of vomiting, but i dont like it... at all....

i volunteer at a large hospital in the sdsu/pacu. the reason why i chose this unit is because ill have the most interaction with nurses and see what they do. i do whatever the nurses ask for and i escort patients to their cars or where ever. when i took the position, it never dawned on me that people in the pacu would be feeling nauseous from the anesthesia and vomit... when the nurse was giving me a tour of the unit she handed me a blue "barf bag" and told me to have at least two on me when escorting patients. i must have looked like a deer in headlights when she said that bc she started laughing at me and said "honey, its the pacu! it happens!". well, it sure does. ive been there a month (only there 3 hours a week) and have had two patients vomit while i was escorting them.. now, im over it. i use to be sooo nervous about it and now i just expect it to happen.

to me, the best way to get over something your afraid of is just to face it and get the heck over it. i wanted to run the other way when i was told patients would vomit but i couldnt. so now i just deal with it.
