OU Accelerated BSN Questions

I don't know which campus you are applying too, but I am attending the Tulsa campus.

1) What kind of schedule do they have you on? (ie Weekdays only? How many rotation/class days a week?)

It depends on where we are in the semester. Weekdays only. There is occasionally a community clinical on Saturday, but that has happened to me once. So no, problem. This semester @ the beginning:

Monday - class 9-11; class 1-3

Tuesday - clinical

Wednesday clinical

Thursday - class 9-11; class 1-3

Friday class either 9-11 or 12-1.

Right now, I have finished all of my community stuff and clinical stuff, so I now have Tuesday and Thursday off. And we have finished our clinical class, so that takes out Monday afternoon and Fridays. But we have our final in clinical 2 the week after Thanksgiving.

You have each class once per week, unless you have an online class, for instance, pharm - we have that class online, but she still meets with us every other week.

2) What is the course load like? (I've heard they're using a block-schedule, how often are tests?)

Tests this semester have been weekly. One class per week. THANK GOODNESS, but the week after Thanksgiving is going to be a bear, we have a test everyday that week, thanks for the break :)

3) What did you wish you knew before you started this program?

I had heard from friends that it is doable. And it is, it is tough, lots of volume. I would recommend if you have time, take Pharm in the spring - this class is SO HARD - we have a few people who took the class before and it is a refresher for them. If I could live my life over....

I've just applied to OU's accelerated BSN program, and had a few questions for those in the know.

I am in the ABSN program in OKC.

1) During the summer, we were in class most of the day everyday Monday-Friday, depending on what groups you were in for Clinical lab and Assessment. The summer classes were block-scheduled, so we usually only had 1 or 2 courses at a time. This semester, we have nothing on Monday (unless your group has pre-planning), clinical on Tuesday, 3 classes Wednesday (although 2 are usually just online), community clinical Thursday (for 3-6 weeks), and lab Friday (but only for the first part of the semester). So, there is still plenty of work to do, but most of it consists of reading and online activities at home. If that was thoroughly confusing, you can look at our schedules on the College of Nursing website.

2) The summer was a little rough. You are in class all day, and then you have to go home and do ridiculous internet assignments. This semester, I rarely have to go to campus, but there is still plenty of internet work to do. Classes are not block-scheduled during the fall, but labs are front-loaded and community is only a few weeks long. We have about 1 test per week.

3) The program is pretty much what I expected, but many of my classmates have complained that they did not realize the amount of work that would be involved. It seems to me that once you survive the summer, you should have no problem in the fall. There are a few instructors that I don't like much, but there are several who are excellent.

That was really helpful. I'm sitting here now waiting to hear about my application, kind of stressing out. I'm a male OU grad, 3.53 GPA, 3.25 science GPA, History major... just unsure about my chances of getting accepted.

How would you say I might fare?

sonicdevo - I thought for sure that I would not get in. My GPA was not even a 3.0 (had too much fun my freshman year of college). Science GPA was 4.0. OU looks @ your last 60 credit hours. So consider that when you are looking at your grades. Best of luck to you!
