Ortho NP interview in NY state

Hi guys,

I'm a Canadian trained FNP and I have an interview next week for a Ortho NP position in the NY state. I'm a new grad, expecting to write my AANP exam next month. The interview is scheduled from 10am to 5pm: separate interviews with the ortho surgeons, supervisors, management team, directors, etc. They also arranged for me a tour in the morning with a real estate agent to show me the community. The hospital is also paying for my hotel stay the night before my interview (i was very impressed with their generosity.)

I REALLY really want this job, however i've never experienced an interview process that last all day, and I'm unfamiliar with the NP practice in NY (if there is any particularity), AND I have little to no experience in Ortho (RN experience in ER and ICU). I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to prepare for the interview and what to expect??

Thanks!

Well, good luck. I'd say study some ortho NP material. Learn from some ortho clinic websites the most common conditions/procedures. That is an excellent opportunity for you so I hope you get it. Interviews usually just cover the big picture stuff anyway--they want to know if you can spot post surgical problems, pain management, and rehab. Usually they will take care of the pre-surgical workup but you need to know what to look for and what they would suggest doing. It is all doable and after you get some time in it, probably common sense. It might help to look at interventional pain management websites to get familiar with some of those procedures (common to ortho too) and the lingo...pulling off the interview is doable. If you have the time this site is very useful: Orthobullets.com

Hi Chiromed0, thank you for your post! I had my interview earlier this week and it was a very long day. I had 10+ meetings/interviews of 30min throughout the day. Everyone seemed very nice, the recruiter said she got good feedback from the interviewers and will put together an official offer sometime next week.

However there is a couple of things I'm not sure about with this job. It appears to be a salary job with no bonus or OT, and I have yet to see any medical practice where things finish on time. The NPs at this organization are unionized (which seemed very unusual to me) so the yearly raise is 3% as per the union agreement. I'd like to negotiate an hourly rate with the organization and be compensated for OT, esp they expect the clinic NP to also cover inpatient and ER duties as needed. Do you think it's possible that they would accept my request?? And how much should a New grad NP expect to make in Ortho in NYS?

Thanks!!
