open interview day

Published

I like to share my flustrated experience with other nurses especially who are seeking for a job.

There was an advertisement of "open interview" from one of the top leading hospital in nyc.

It says "we are seeking experienced nurses for our new high acuity med/surg are with hotel-like amenties"

There was no conditions for example " BSN nurses only, or review your resume and call you by manager if you are currently in the BSN program." as they advertised.

However, things happened.....there were a lot of nurses waiting for their first cut from the secretary.

"What??!!" I thought "this is an open interview and whoever has an med-surg experience can come and have an interview"

There were some nurses who have turned down because of the hospital's hidden qualification in terms of hiring nurses.

Currently I am unemployed RN for about a year and I have 5 plus years of experience and I only have associated degree in nursing but will go to school in 2010.

These kind of economic situation, not only other gorup of workers but also we, nurses are having a tough time to find a job. I was trilled to have this great opportunity just having an interview.....

I am wondering why the hospital gave the faulse hope to nurses who were desperated and made me foolish to believe the so called "open interview days"....if i knew about this, i would not go there and i did not have to go through the emotions like angry or dissapointing.

"NO ONE DESERVES THAT"

this is the "new york-presbyterian the university hospital of columbia and cornell" ...so anyone who is interested in making a trip to there then be prepare for their two faces otherwise they will cut you off without any sympathy.

what do u think guys?

I think the add was reasonably clear in stating what they were looking for -- experienced nurses for a "top of the line" M/S floor. I don't find it surprising at all that a prestigious university hospital creating a new unit providing special amenities for patients who can afford them would be highly selective in their hiring -- especially in an economic climate in which they can be highly selective in their hiring decisions.

Sure anyone is welcome to apply ... but they are only going to pick the cream of the crop, with the best experience, the best education, etc. they can find. I think that is only natural.

I agree with you but "open interview" is open to every nurses who have an experience in med/surg like they advertised. I may not get that job but should have the interview chance??

I have applied to that hospital several times, and have a BSN. However, I don't have the amount of hospital experience that you do. So even with my BSN, I still wouldn't get hired. I think it's competitive to get into that hospital. I know other nurses with more experience than me, and also with a BSN, and didn't get called back for an interview. I also was told that they also get hundreds of applications from nurses on their online app. site, so it could be that too many nurses are applying, so even those with top qualifications may not all be chosen either.
