Hello Everyone,

Do anybody have any idea about OHNP job duties? what is their salary range in NY? what is the scope of growth professionally? Is anybody working as an OHNP currently and how are they doing?

Thank you,

VaD

I work for Concentra- They are an occupational medicine/urgent care company. I currently work as an occupational health NP and love my job. I believe they are in New York as well. Check them out. PM me for any questions.

What is your shift? Do you also promote wellness programs for employees? Or it is strictly urgent care and occupational health?

If you work at one of our centers it is 8-5pm Monday through Friday with no weekends, and no calls.

If you work at an onsite clinic (meaning you are based at a company as a contractor but work for Concentra) your hours are basically defined inthe terms of your contract- so mine is 7-4pm Monday through Friday with no weekend provider coverage.

I strictly do occupational med since I am contracted to a large vendor. In the urgent care you will do both occ med and urgent care, department of transportation physicals (which I do as well) , hearing tests, fit tests etc.

Yes I am looking for this kind of urgent care where they have no weekends and work M to F for 8 hrs. I don't think they have any clinics in NY area but I will keep looking if they have anything in Connecticut or New Jersey. Do you need any special certification for Occupational medicine?

Not at all- I started off as a new grad and am almost finishing up my 18 months!  We have plenty of clinics in New Jersey!!

What are some of your daily tasks? What surprised you the most about being an NP in occupational health? I'm a current NP student and considering occupational health/ considering doing a minor in occ health.

Thank you in advance ?

My daily tasks these days in a lot of COVID tests and signing off on them. But generally we do a lot of pre employment physicals, Department of Transportation medical clearances, work injuries- which pretty much include any body part and mostly musculoskeletal, ordering diagnostics, referring to PT, Chiro, OT, or surgery and then managing those patients post surgery with their surgeons.

Do you find that you started out at a similar pay compared to other NPs who are not in occ health? (not that I am working for the pay- more interested in low stress... just curious!)

Thank you for your helpful response ?

Not at all. In fact I started off higher than most of my classmates who got jobs in primary care and work their buts off!  I have also gotten a raise every year for the last two years. My situation is unique since I am based inside a large food manufacturing plant. The food manufacturer contracts with my company to provide occ med for their employees so I am only limited to their employees. If I worked at one of my company’s urgent care/occ health clinics they get really busy- each clinician sees 30-32 patients a day and it’s very fast paced.
