L&D in Rockford IL or Beloit WI area?

Hi,

I'm hoping some of you are from IL or WI and can help!

My youngest daughter is pregnant and due mid December. She is an undergraduate at Roosevelt. She and her husband did live in the Chicago area, where she's been receiving her PNC at PCC in Oak Park IL. She was planning on delivering at West Suburban, maybe Cook County. Well, they just moved to Beloit, WI (they were able to rent a gas station there to manage, her husband wants to get into the gas station business, and work up to start buying them) and now she's unsure if she will be able to make the 1 1/2 hour or so drive to Chicago to deliver. She asked me about hospitals in the Rockford IL area (a 20 min drive from where she lives) or Beloit (she wants to deliver in IL because her baby will qualify for pediatric care -- they are poor without insurance, and are paying for everything with cash).

Do any of you have information about L&D in this area? Any positive recommendations, any places to avoid? Possibly any places with midwives? I don't know a thing about that area.

Of course, if I'm there when she goes into labor, I will be able to safely drive her to Oak Park to deliver -- but she doesn't trust herself with this and I don't blame her. I'm also bringing a bulb syringe and sterile gloves and receiving blankets. (My kids wanted me to catch their babies, but dang it, she decided to have unprotected sex before I graduate from my CNM program!)

This is a different topic on this, but I need to vent. The timing of her pregancy has been driving me nuts -- I need to work over break (I'm in school, completely out of money, can't pay rent) and can't stay here to work after finals (have an opportunity to work the week after finals) because of her due date. Have tried to locate agencies in Rockford to find per diem work while I'm there, to no avail. I'm hoping she either delivers before 12-13, in which case I'll miss the delivery, so I can change my plane ticket for the last part of break, and therefore get to work, or if she has no signs of labor by about the 10th I might change my ticket anyway another week so that I can work, or put my ticket on indefinate hold and just drive there in one day (14hrs per maps.yahoo from CT to WI border).

Anyway. Happy holidays to all, and sending good wishes to all of you in school.

Blessings to you all. Your post "called out" to me when you mentioned your SIL's desire to own and operate service stations. That's what my dad and grandpa did for living, and they once owned stations in both Rockford and Beloit! Anyway, enough of a trip down memory lane.

I would not recommend a 1-1/2 or 2 hour drive for a woman in labor, especially on the IL expressway/tollway system, and during winter, to boot! I attended NIU in DeKalb, and we had our OB and peds clinicals at Swedish American and Rockford Memorial Hospitals. That was 20 years ago, and I had a favorable impression of those facilities then. I would certainly check into them and see what services they offer, and whether there may be any way to register for a short-stay at a reduced cost if your daughter has an uncomplicated delivery. Many hospitals offer that option, but it usually has to be arranged in advance for self-pay patients. An appointment with a social worker may be helpful, too, as there are sometimes private funds available to help low-income families with hospital costs.

Best wishes to everyone for a safe and uneventful delivery!

Elkhorn Hospital is a baby friendly hospital. There is a midwife on staff there (her name is not coming to me at the moment.) The hospital is about 30 miles outside of Beloit. There is also a homebirth midwife in the area. If I can be of help please feel free to email me at [email protected] I live about an hour and a half north of Beloit but I know people in the area. By the way I am a doula and student midwife. Jen
