I am a nursing student and I am thinking about going in to oncology. I recently had a close family member die of lung cancer and some of the nurses that we had were wonderful, I don't know what we would have done without them. I know how hard it was and I would like to give others the support and care we got, cause I know how bad they need it. Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

Hi,
I too am a student nurse, now a nurse extern at an outpt oncology center. I had a very young family member die of breast CA at age 33, so I too have the same interest.
For me, working in oncology while a student is a dream come true for me. Seriously.
You may want to check out the Oncology Nursing Society's website at http://www.ons.org
There is a wealth of information for students as well as seasoned nurses and beyond. I joined the national ONS and then the local chapter. That is how I got my extern position. ONS also offers scholarships for undergrads so you may want to check that out as well.
Best,
Diane
Thank you for that info. I didn't know anything about ONS. Thanks again.
You're welcome. Oncology is a great specialty that needs caring individuals like yourself.
Best to you!
