Nursing student interested in oncology

Published

I am in my second semester of nursing school and currently work in home health as a nurses aid. I really have a strong desire to learn more about nursing specialities, specifically oncology nursing. I've browsed through the ONS website, but I'm looking for advice about what I can do as a student to increase my chances of landing a job in oncology. Any advice from those more experienced than I am?

Thanks so much!

Does your school have any clinicals where you get to choose your location? Such as a preceptorship at the end of the program? If so, try to do some clinicals in the oncology unit. You can also express your interests to your instructors and ask that they help you get set up with some shadowing experiences on the oncology floor. Then, while you're there, network with nurses, managers and staff so that they remember you and can give you a reference if you apply for a job in the future.

As far as I know, we do not have a choice in our clinical location, but I'll be sure it keep that in mind. I will definitely try to get my foot in the door with shadowing experiences as well. I'm sure that will be extremely beneficial in learning more about oncology! I'm just eager to do more than I'm able to, we don't start clinical for another semester :/.

Thanks!
