I am concerned because some of the nursing schools are sacrificing good science and math classes for the sake of liberal arts classes. I recently saw where one nursing does not require chemistry but requires speech and a literature/English module for ADN. When I contacted the state board of trustees, they were less than forthcoming on the issue. I feel the overemphasis we have now on those subjects outside the maths and the sciences we need are affecting the performance of our students. I have students that struggle with acid-base and electrolyte balances because they have never had chemistry. I believe we as nurses need to take back control of our profession and we, not liberal arts majors, should determine the courses of study necessary to give quality, evidence-based care.

Hello. I am a second term nursing student who just had tests on acid base and electrolytes. It is very difficult to understand unless you have had chemistry but not impossible. My nursing school does not have chemistry as a standard to get into it's ranks, but all other math and sciences are stressed. I still wish I had taken chemistry though.
