nursing and nutrition

Published

I decided to go back to school about a year ago and I am currently a dietetics students and originally wanted to become a registered dietitian. I have one more semester left until I am done. Well, I've decided to apply to nursing school instead of the dietetic internship and I was wondering if anyone had any idea of nursing being involved in dietetics? So far, I've heard that I am already ahead of the game because of my dietetics background. I guess I am not sure what they meant by that... I am wondering how I can use my nutrition background as a nurse. I know public health nurses do some nutrition education, but is there anything else I can do that is more "clinical"? Would I be able to facilitate nutrition classes/workshops in a hospital or counsel patients on nutrition as it pertains to their condition?

Also, should I finish my last semester of dietetics classes? Mind you, I will have completed the "Didactic program in dietetics" and will NOt be receiving a bachelors degree.

Thank you in advance.

Why don't you stay in dietetics and nutrition? It seems like such a lovely career, I kind of wish I could drop nursing for that.

I graduated with a BS in dietetics. Went back to school about 18 months later for nursing. What people are probably meaning about being ahead of the curve is with the science aspect of it & also about having developed those critical thinking skills. Truthfully, I don't use actual nutrition knowledge much in my day to day nursing (in-pt oncology/hematology).
