Nursing Dilemas and ethical principles...

Published

Hi, we just started school and I already need help lol. I have a project due about Nursing Dilemas and ethical principles vs personal values. My assingment is Respect. I'm having trouble coming up with the powerpoint presentation! I know what respect is, but in definition ethical principle has not right or wrong answer and but needs rational analysis and maybe emotionally charged. So how is repect apart of this? I mean I honestly don't understand, personally you should respect everyone but then again I guess that's just my personal value. lol

I'm having trouble coming up with ideas for the presentation, stories or examples. The best one I can think of is that your in the er room and there is a little girls fell and hurt herself and a older woman who just fell too, you go to help the girl b/c in ur head u think she's going to live longer guess u will help her first. (I honestly don't think that) But never really being in an ethical dilemas in the medical field I"mnot to sure what to put. I was hoping someone could share their opinons, their personal values on the subjects or definitions or funny stories so I don't bore the class to death. I've looked it up and researched it but most of it just says "respect the patient" lol, duh. I wish i had got beneficence or nonmalefience instead.

Can anyone help?

i guess my question is really how is respect an ethical dilemma? lol, along with some stories or pointers. I wish they would have given this assignment after we started clincials so that I could see my personal vlaues vs what i should be doing.

One thing that comes into mind is how nurses manage to work with patients whose culture seems so foriegn to them. Imagine the possibilities. Here are a few examples of different cultural beliefs. Think about how you, as a nurse, would work in these situation and not judge the patient on their beliefs.

Islam Culture: Sometimes the woman's husband or father must be present to give consent for medical treatment.

Jehovah's Witness: Taking blood into the body is prohibited. Imagine a 4 year old child's only chance of survivial is a blood transfusion and the family objects based on their religious belief.

Orthodox Judaism: Babies are named by the father and male babies are named on the 8th day, when they are circumsized.

You walk into a room and the patient is praying. What do you do? Say you are non religious and do not believe in the power of prayer? Books say you are to stay in the room, in silience if asked. Now, this is a conflict of your own personal beliefs, but you understand that you must respect the patient.

Do some research in your fundementals book, particularly in cultural compentence. I think you will find lots of ideas for your project.

Or... .how about nursing in a family planning clinic? Giving out birth control products and information and/or performing abortions might pose a dilemma with one's personal ethics.
